I have been using my wireless 360 controller for all my gaming on my pc for just over a year now. I also use my wired headset that plugs into it for skype and what not. I never had any issues. ( I also like to begin sentences with the word "I" )

Today I installed the trial version of BSR Screen Recorder 4. I don't know if that had anything to do with it or not but it's really the only thing I have changed since I last successfully used my headset. There is always a wireless 360 controller connected to my pc and has a charge and play cable at all times so it never shuts off or loses connection. Anyway, I plug the headset into the controller and *batman style whaAAAaamo* memory dump.
So I'm all wtf and restart. Then while restarting I get a message saying windows failed to start and it asked me if I wanted to use the backup partition to restore. That back up is something like eight months old so I said no, disconnected the headset and crossed my fingers.

Two failed restarts later it just decided to work and I lost nothing. So I open skype and reconnect the headset. I went into skype's options to select the headset and the moment I hit save, again with the bsod...

I can't figure this thing out for the life of me. I am about to uninstall the trial version of that screen recorder but I am sure that if it was the cause that uninstalling it will do nothing as what ever changes happened, aren't within the trial.

If I still blue screen, I will try syncing my wireless headset and see what happens. Then if I still suck at computing, I will try out a usb headset to see if it could just be something with the wireless receiver for 360 devices.

I... I have nothing. Only the obvious that there's some strange hardware compatability issue here. So it crashes the second you plugged it in, and then it crashed again when you SAVED the options involving said mic in skype (but at least was able to connect it this time).

I'm not sure if you are on XP or vista. But if you can get the mic connected and your computer on, go into control pannel and check your sound propperties and see if it is registered there. I know vista has sound levels so you can verbally test the mic. If it doesn't show up there, then I'd say just forget it. If it does, then maybe it's just that skype doesn't like it or something off the wall like that.

Alternately, I suggest buying a mic stand and just use your Rockband mic. That's what I do, and I love it.
