Random nerdy trivia!

In most of translations, Gregor Samsa wakes up as a cockroach!

But, in the original German text, Samsa wakes up as an 'Ungeziefer', which can be translated roughly as a 'vermin' or 'bug'. And Kafka keeps using the word Ungeziefer to the very end of the book.
So, actually, we never get to know into what Samsa turns. We only know it's some sort of gigantic insect.

Perhaps, given Kafka's penchant for self loathing, tragic main characters, one can also translate the text to mean that he was using the term metaphorically, and all allusions to the fact that he is an insect of some type are simply his way of extending the metaphor, as a sort of a way of making/forcing the reader (to) embrace the world view of the protagonist.

That was also, more or less, my interpretation.
I defend that Gregor becomes a cockroach because he always was one, and thus it really doesn't change much for him.
