Seriously, I decided to look at one of my RMXP games and what I've imported into it. I found that there was something called "PPThumbs" in every import type. I deleted all the instances, and decided to do a search to find out where else it wound up.

It's pretty much invaded every subfolder within "My Documents" and "ScanSoft Documents". My search turned up 251 instances of PPThumbs.ptn! I don't know what a .ptn file is supposed to be, but I guarentee that they're not suppose to be there. So I'm gonna delete them.

Question is, what would cause this? Virus? Trojan? Adware? I wonder what I should use to track it down...

I did a little digging around. Apparently PPThumbs.ptn are utility files created by a program called Papperport which I heard was a "document file management software program"... a word proccessor perhaps?

The software is legit, as it is from Scansoft. Not that it's a well known name brand or anything. But the fact that it's only in your my documents makes me feel better about it. Programs usually only store files in "My" area's in computers anyway.

If it was in say... your System 32 folder, THEN I'd be worried.

Do you even own a copy of Papperport?

Sounds like someone owns a scanner. And it's PaperPort (only one p) :). So yeah it's fine, it's probably like the thumbs.db file that windows adds to any folder you view in thumbnail mode. You were probably browsing your computer with PaperPort, or it runs some kind of search for scan documents (images).

Whoops, forgot about the topic. Yeah, that's the case. Nice to know it's not an issue. Though I wish it were more selective about where it put those files. Did it have to be in every subfolder?
