Something my friend sent me, I thought it was great.

Quote:
THE BEST Put Down LINE EVER
For those that don't know him, Major General Peter Cosgrove is an 'Australian treasure!'

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently.

You'll love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children. Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this! This is one of the best comeback lines of all time. It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing,
archery and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised
on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity
to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE:

Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute,
but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent.

I'd read that before, in a joke compilation. Dunno if it came before or after this General thing.

Even though, it's awesome. ^^

Does anyone here see how his comeback line is not quite analagous although it appears so at first glance?

Does anyone here see how it is more a debate technique than a proper argument based on a full disclosure of all relevant points?

Does anyone here value the restraint and patience to show respect to another even if they do not show respect to you to help convey a full analysis of the merits of the comparison for the sake of greater understanding?

^ she Was digging into him... and he's military - they don't have restraint.

on a side note i've read this before with different characters so either it's a joke given a bit of reality or reality that got turned into a popular joke... but yeah. /clap etc

@Bo- Who cares about the logistics of f*cking debate? I really don't.

@Sumisem- Military doesn't have restraint? The f*ck? They have more restraint than the average person. I don't know what you're getting at with that statement, but it's pretty baseless to me.

One who cares about the logistics of a debate is one who cares about the merits of the exchange. Who cares about who can put down someone else in a 'cooler' way? I really don't but I admit from this topic, it seems that some of you do.

I admit that I do.

Oh, I also care about the logistics of a debate. But you can't (and really shouldn't) care about it all the time.
You'll agree with me that it all depends on context, yesno? You were saying yourself the other day how hard it was to talk to girls about philosophy in the bar. You really can't expect people to be 'deep' all the time. It's too... tiring.

^^

Man, go read The Republic in a corner and dream of your happy place if you're going to keep this up.
It's people like you who give Philosophy its trite name; and Philosophy really did not need any more of a trite name.
You wonder why people don't give a sh*t about any of those 'deep' matters you consistently chuck into their faces, like cat-scat pies and meadow-muffins?
You. You, who with plangent moralizations and a voice like a nasal whine swoop into merriment and wreak such a havoc of yawns that the thread dies of oxygenation to the point of excess.
You're not even the lone wolf of wisdom, at this rate, you're the kid who we all secretly want to pants, but don't, out of laziness or pity.
You're like those people on the corner, bellowing Christ and Salvation at us as we pass by, unable to hear ourselves think over your impotent excess.
I want to slit your throat and stuff all manner of tomes, page by page, into the gash, and then I will burn you on an alter, silently praying that you take all of your malformed, tinsel and ticker-tape Wisdom into the void with you.

So yes, Bo, I do in fact value restraint and patience.

*winks*

Well. Hm.

I was pretty wasted when I wrote that, Bo.

I think the point was to show you that patience and restraint have their place, though I'm not really sure how that would've managed it. When I'm drunk you can ask me, I assure you it is in fact all perfectly logical.

*shrugs*
