Well I'm about to graduate high school and I need to think of a career. I have been thinking about going to college for game design. Two of my best buddies that I've know forever have been telling me just to try, but I'm still kind of skeptical.

It would be my dream job, but I don't know how realalistic that goal is. I just don't want to start spending a crap load of money on classes and stuff if it wouldn't pay off. I need to think ahead considering the fact that my parents really can't afford to help me to much.

The problem is I don't really have that much experiance. I'm more then willing to work for it, but what are the chances of actually getting into that kind of job? I don't know if I want to take the chance. This is a big decision that I need to make, that could effect my future.

What do you guys think? Is it worth a try?

It's worth a try so long as you know what you'd be getting into.

Creating games means 12 hour days. It also means an average salary and your game might not even make it big.

This counts whether you work for a game company or on your own. It's tons of work for a very risky set of profits.

But if you love it, go for it.

I'm someone who has dropped lots of time and money into college, and I still haven't really decided what I want to do.

Also keep in mind that at the end, you might decide not to do it. And that's perfectly fine.

I say go for it! Why the hell not, you're only young once! If you have the faintest idea what you want to do, run with it, and don't let anyone get you down!

Sorry, in one of those motivational moods.

If you want it, attain it!

Personally, I am a general communications media major, and I've taken a game design class and a few other ones. This way, I can break into game making, 2D, or 3D animation, and anything else I can freelance. Comm media is quite versatile for me.:)

The experience thing works for me as well. I never touched an electronics or engineering course before college. It's rough, but I'm managing somehow. But you should go for it if that's what you want.

Honestly...do it... I've known the regret of not trying something when i had the chance and of trying something and it not working out.... Of the two the not working out is the easiest to live with day to day.

Oooh, do it, do it!!! If you have the motivation, do it!

I found this book to be pretty interesting. It tells you the pros and cons for basically any job in the videogame industry.

^Its a good read. Some of my dream jobs don't seem as fun after you read the book though. The game tester job description scared the crap out of me, just like Ixzion said, "lots of overtime and regular pay."

I like how one of the videogame developers said, "The worst thing about my job is working with people who don't like or play videogames." That makes perfect sense to me. I believe that you should have some type of passion for videogames before you make any of em'. The world is getting too many half-baked games now-a-days. :(
