OMG! I just saw the most awesome rock musical a few days ago. Its called "Hedwig and the Angry Inch".
***Minor Spoiler***
Though definately for the more...liberal crowd, Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a hilarious, fun, sad, and poignant rock musical. Hedwig stars Hedwig, a transexual glam rocker in the 1990's (this is nothing like Rent, mind). Born in East Berlin, a young Hedwig (then known as Hansel) sees the rise of the Berlin wall. Seeing his ticket out of the east side of the wall, Hansel marries an American soldier. But to get out of Berlin, he will have to "leave something behind".
Enter Hedwig. Now divorced, SHE has become the a mostly unknown rock star. She tutors a young boy named Tommy in the art of rock and roll, but things change when Tommy steals all of her material and becomes a famous rock star on his own.
I would tell you more, but saying anything else would ruin it.
***End Spoiler***
The play doesn't move along like you'd expect it to, however. Every event in the play has already happened. And Hedwig tells her story directly to you. I loved that the fourth wall was nonexistent in this production. Hedwig talks directly to the audience (and in some cases, interacting with them as well--Hint: If you don't want a chance of ending up with a man in drag in your lap, don't sit in the front row. Poor guy at the performance that I saw...he must have not known what he came to see...lol!) It includes many wonderful (and in some cases, thought provoking) songs that range from hilarious, to particularly heartbreaking, to both. And all of the songs help tell the story in a very entertaining way. Its just such an awesome play!
There is also a Hedwig movie, if you want to check that out, but It pales in comparison to the original stage work.
There is one production currently going on in the Nashville, TN area. Though I doubt anybody lives near here. If you do, however, get a chance to see this show near where you live, DO IT, though I can't garauntee it will be as good as the one I saw (it was amazing in every way).
Sorry for my rambling, but you just gotta see this production at least once (even if it is the Good-but-not-THAT-good movie).
