Well last time I went to the dentist (about a month ago) they were supposed to take out my wisdom teeth. They didn't. Instead, looking at the x-rays, they discovered I have an absess (spelling?).

Basically, an infection at the base of a tooth, way up in the gums. Usually there is pain involved but I did not experiance any due to my awesomely awesome awesomtacity. Weird thing is, the absess is in the front of my mouth, as far from the wisdom teeth as possible. Probably caused from some blunt trauma the dentist told me.

*Flashes back to New Years 05/06* But that's another story.

Well of course it is so large that antibiotics won't do the trick. So Friday morning at 10am AZ time, I will be knocked out by an I.V. and be under the knife. I hate dentists and I have never had any type of surgery. Needless to say I am nervous as hell and not looking forward to tomarrow. But I guess I better man up and stop my whining!

I've never had dental surgery, but I've had to have normal surgery many times.

Don't be nervous, there is usually little pain involved within the first 2 hours after surgery.

Oh and just be happy you aren't getting a Spinal Tap... They shove a needle up your back without giving you anything to knock you out.

So basically, MAN UP!

Lol, gl to ya man. Never had a surgery of any sort in my life. Hmmm, I'll go ahead and be preemptive and say that I'm sure the cigs will take care of that cause I'm certain Lantis will make that comment as soon as he sees this post. :D

*ignores*

Anyway, I've had a few surgeries durring my time. One of which was having my wisdom teeth removed... The actual surgery (in all instances) weren't bad at all. I have no worry towards going under. It's the first few days afterwards that kind of suck. If I could skip the first week after every surgery, I'd be perfectly fine.

Minus the surgery I had for my broken arm. It took me almost a month before I could stretch it out completely. It still kind of pains me every now and then... like when it's humid and such.

surgery!?

*Runs*
<__<

I never had any surgery. I have no idea what its like to be "put under" And I hope I will never find out.

I heard stories.. That they don't always give you enough. And you know everything and feel everything.. And yet your too drugged to call for help.

I also heard about getting an epadorel (spelling?) Putting a needle in your back to numb from the waste down. I'm sorry.. But when I lean on my legs for to long.. I get that tingle. I hate that. I'm trying to rub it to wake it back up. If I can't feel my own legs or move my toes.. I think I would want to die.

Only surgery I've had is for the wisdom teeth as well. Apparently they put me all the way under and weren't supposed to, not sure if it's because I was breathing wrong or what but certainly lead to one of the most interesting experience of my life. Nothing like feeling, seeing, tasting, and smelling nothing, but still being able to hear the music you're listening to and still being conscious. Needless to say it brings new light to the soul/body argument, as I imagine that's what it's like to be a soul without a body (minus the hearing). So I get up from that, mouth completely numb drooling all over myself thinking it's done since no one was around me. Walk toward the desk and find out they hadn't started :(.

But yeah I didn't feel too much, though I could somewhat feel the drill, no pain though. Nothing like the taste of ground tooth and blood though, don't think I'll be erasing that from my long term taste memory. But yeah after a few days all is good. Though every now and then the pressure between my left ear and the inside of my mouth equals or something, and it feels really weird, and makes me speak off key I think. Not sure if that happened before the surgery or not.

Wanna talk of dentistry?

I can talk of dentistry.

About 8 years ago, one of my teeth cracked open. A molar in the lower left jaw. Over the course of that year, it slowly fell apart. The tooth rotted, the nerve died, and I did nothing of it.

Several months ago, the same tooth on the other side of that jaw began to rot. It had started to form a really big cavity right in the middle of it. Did nothing.

A little over a month ago, one of my front teeth cracked open. I did something.

May 7th - I went in to the dentist to get a checkup.
The news?

I had 17 cavities and needed a root canal and a crown.

Over the course of the next month, I had 7 appointments all of which required one to two hour sessions under the drill. Lots of blood, lots of pain.

June 11th, today: I have just finished getting all of these things fixed. My mouth is still frozen - 6 freezing needles today.

The bill?

$3100.

No coverage.

^ Really... ouch.

And I thought my situation (y'know, breaking the same freakin' front tooth 4 times) was bad.
Good luck to all of the dentist-victims out there =x
Personally, I never thought it was too bad. But then again, never experienced anything more serious than repairing broken teeth with the mouth stuck open for a couple of hours.

Wow. That both sucks and blows at the same time.

Mine went very well. As soon as they started pumping the meds I was passed out cold. The first thing I remember was being at Safeway picking up my Amoxicillin and Vicodin. My friend was messing with me asking all kinds of ridiculous questions that I can't quite remember, let alone my responses. Despite the horror stories, I only bled the first day and part of the second. On the the third day (yesterday) one of the stitches caught on my toothbrush and came undone so I pulled it out.

I havn't taken the pain killers since Saturday night and the pain is very mild. I guess I just got lucky or had a good dentist. Too bad his receptionist sucked. I set up the appointment through her and she said they could take care of my absess, which was the main reason for my appointment being scheduled a month in advance. When I get there and meet the dentist, he informs me that he doesn't perform those proceedures and I was pissed. Needless to say I now have to find another dentist that can. I just don't see the big deal. It is just a root canal to remove the infection. People get them all the time. Why do I have to see a specailist? Whatever.

All in all I had a good but aggrivating experience. Anyone else have a dentist story?

Eh, can't say I like the dentist that much either, but my mouth has gone through dentist hell in it's lifetime.

Let's see.....fillings on all four corners of my mouth, an overbite which resulted in 5 years of painful operations and braces. Before the braces I had to get four baby teeth removed, was passed out for that, and recently had two wisdom teeth removed from the back of my lower jaw. I hope that makes you feel better :lol

The sad part is that I accidently ate one of my fillings. Trust me, do not go with white fillings, always the silver stuff. Gonna enjoy that operation. "Well doctor, I ate my filling".

And my teeth are yellow....Not very pretty. That's because I don't brush enough, but that part is my fault.

If there's any good news to come out of it though, it's that I now have a beautiful, straight smile. It just took a lot of years of pain to get there.

NO. The Silver fillings are typically Amalgam and contain mercury, one of the most toxic metals on the planet. So not really sure you want that in your mouth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental_amalgam_controversy

Though generally considered by dentist to be safe (who are supplying them mind you), I certainly don't want any amount of mercury vapor in my mouth. So while it won't have immediate effects, the possibility of long term negative effects on the body have not proven conclusive either way.

Really? I had no clue.

The alternative are white fillings, which in my case lasted just under 2 years. Or go with a silver filling that will last for much longer. Personally, I'd prefer not to eat my fillings every year and a half, thank you.

Unless there is an alternative, I'm all ears.

Hmmm... Another appointment. This one is for the absess. Root canal. No sedation. Freak out. June 29th.

They will give me shots and laughing gas but I so wish I could find an endodontist that is also and MD so I can be IV sedated. But once again, I am just complaining. I am not a fan of dental work, but who is? Anyway... This better be the last time cuz that's three appointments in six weeks. I still need to get a filling redone and I hope that they can do both that and the root canal in one visit.

Well our fluorinated water is made with crap fluoride that's a waste product from various chemical plants according to some, not pure fluoride. And I think it's actually somewhat bad for us now that we also get fluoride in our toothpastes. I'm still curious as to what people did before tooth brushes and such, though I guess most didn't live that long to find out, and ate real food and not highly processed crap. Hurray progress?

They, as well, had almost no sugar available for their diets.

I know people who live off of sugar these days.

Boo! I hate the dentist >__<

I also had a teeth surgery once too...and you've guessed it, it hurts real bad. Like one time, before a surgery the dentist injected me a painkiller near my upper tooth. After the surgery my lips puffed and i can still feel the pain...o.0

BTW, have any of you ever thought of brushing your teeth with crushed strawberries? The antioxidant in strwaberries can make your teeth more white and prevent plaque ^^
