What can I say about "Elysium"? Well, I liked it when it was called "District 9". It's virtually the same movie. Evil Haves vs Good Have Nots.

In "District 9", we've got a Have who, through a freak accident, becomes a Have Not. He spends a majority of the film trying to save his own ass while not giving a crap about anyone else, and at the end he sacrifices himself to save the Have Nots. Well, two of them anyway. The implication is that Christopher will return and rescue the rest of the Have Nots.

In "Elysium", we've got a Have Not who wants to become a Have. He spends a majority of the film trying to save his own ass while not giving a crap about anyone else, and at the end he sacrifices himself to save the Have Nots.

The two characters are virtually interchangeable, and the Haves in both films are evil. This Neill Blomkamf guy has only two feature films to his credit (director and writer), and he's already pigeon-holing himself as "one note".

The theatrical trailer for "Elysium" pretty much said everything the film needed to say. Haves are evil. Have Nots are good. Got it. Having seen the whole thing, I can't say I'm all that impressed. While the visuals of the ringworld were pretty to look at, the recycled storyline delivered bludgeoning head wounds with all the delicacy of James Cameron's "Avatar". Now if you'll excuse me, I must go to the hospital to get those injuries checked out...
