I can imagine the thought process behind this. "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if Mario was actually faster than Sonic? Let's find a way for that to be true and invent some BS to back it up." But just by looking at the footage of Sonic spinning through loops and tunnels and stuff, I can tell he's moving way faster than Mario does in the Mario footage presented there.
