While they do sound similar at first glance (listen?), the bass parts are slightly different. The video game is doing different bass notes, which makes a difference in how the main part is heard and understood.

Still, there is a striking resemblance there. Good find, dude. :)

There's a LOT of these actually. Robo's Theme from Chrono Trigger sounds a lot like Rick Astley's Never Going to Give You Up. Also, a great deal of some classic Sonic tracks sound extremely close to a lot of Michael Jackson's work. Not to mention we will never see a VC release (or any other release for that matter) of Earthbound because of having multiple similarities to songs. These things are everywhere.

Here's a small similarity between the Beatles's "Can't Buy Me Love" and Donkey Kong Country 3's "Mill Fever."

And an even crazier one. Mega Man 6 and McCartney & Jackson's "Say Say Say"

And finally from that same channel, The Beatles and...Dynamite Headdy!?

Umm... I'm not hearing a similarity between the Jackson song and the Sonic one at all.

And the Rick Astley song clashes with the video game music layered on top of it. Especially during the bridge and chorus, where the video game music is playing entirely wrong notes during Astley's song. I can understand the vague similarity between the two, but they're not the same thing at all.

I think these two are reaches. Sorry, dudes.

It's just more that they sound similar. Obviously, they're not gonna be direct clones...

Although, Sonic 3 does mimic a few MJ songs perfectly. There's reason for that, however.

@ Xix - You need to compare them to the chorus, not the verse. I put a time stamp in my example. Might want to give it another listen.

I've been keeping track of a lot of these for years.

My favorites though are all the acts of plagiarism against Lufia 2:
