I can't concentrate on homework at all. All I've been doing for the past few days is reading travel blogs (mainly those from high school students studying abroad). I CAN'T STOP. I have too much homework to do to be slacking off, but it's just so interesting!

I've been to Brussels a couple of times now; got friends over there and maaaaan is it ever an excellent city. Ghent is also great, haven't hit Bruges or Antwerp before but i know a bit about them. Which school are you headed to?

anyway. bit of a confession here. because i am drunk and that is obviously the best state of mind in which to post on public fora.

the other day, i was hanging about in this awesome little shop of which i know and i noticed a particular item on sale. it was a belt buckle.

only, here's the thing, it wasn't exactly just a belt buckle. this thing was a 1700 year old, Roman belt buckle. in pristine condition, sturdily yet beautifully made.

I wanted it. I wanted that piece of metal so incredibly badly that it was only the fact i have to save my wages to make 'plans = reality', which kept me from slapping the money down onto that counter.

I wanted to buy it, make a belt, and attach the buckle to the belt so as to wear it. A piece of Roman history (a thing made and worn by some figure of the long-dead past? tell me that isn't awesome) right there holding my damned jeans up. Looking very pretty as it did so.

It was valued at £55, which is about $75.

So tell me, what was that urge of mine?

... I don't think that one can be properly answered, Regal. Just consider yourself a man of impulse and be happy with it.

All I know is that the first city I'm going to be in (I may change cities when I change host families) is Hoogstraten. I don't know the school or when I leave or anything else, besides the city name.

Oh, wow, Antwerp province eh. That's pure Flemish country (Flemish being a ungainly mix of french and dutch, linguistically, culturally the Flemish have their own identity and take pride in it. Hell, they have their own parliament based in Brussels, which is laughably quaint of them since afaik they get to exercise their authority when and if the Belgian government allows it =p) with (provided you're on the train routes, not sure how Hoogstraten stands in that respect... incidentally Belgian public transport is generally good) really good access to Antwerp, Holland (Amsterdam! ^_^), Brussels, Ghent. Almost everyone can and will speak English if you need them to. Do you speak French, btw? =D

Also holy carp, extremely fresh seafood and Trappist beers.
