Last night I reached down for the power button to turn off my computer, and wound up hitting the reset button by accident. It seems to have messed up a couple things. My Firefox settings were reset and a few of my bookmarks are missing. I'm worried that something else might've been messed up somewhere, too. I tried doing a system restore, at several dates, but they keep failing. I want to find the option that scans my hard drive for damage. I don't know where it is. Could anybody point me in the general direction? (Using Windows XP)

Actually, I don't see why just hitting your restart button would cause so much trouble. I think it's actually suppose to restart your computer or something. =P

All you can do with Firefox is try and get your setting back the way they were, and the bookmarks... When you get those the way you want them I'd go (in firefox) to Bookmarks>Organize Bookmarks. Then File>Export...

So if you every have this kind of issue again, you'll have a backup.

The system restore is another story. I'm not entirely sure how/why that's not functioning properly. Try going into it and creating a restore point yourself instead of just selecting a date. If it restores to the point you set it to, maybe that'll make it kick back into working properly... though that won't do you much good at the present, it's at least something to try in case it should happen again.

The program I think you are looking for is Disk Cleanup. It's in Star>Accessories>System Tools... Might not hurt to defrag too.

Well, what I was looking for was this thing like in older versions of Windows, where if your computer was improperly shut down, it would go through this hard drive scan the next time you boot up to make sure you didn't skrew anything up.

ooooooh, scandisk.

Open My computer, right click your C: drive and go to properties. Click the Tools tab and under Error-checking click Check Now.

I'd go ahead and check both boxes before the scan. It may look diffrent than the blue screen and yellow progress bar... but it does the same thing.

System Restore faied for me recently. It was just after updating my Direct X crap, and since the old Direct X was overwritten, it could not restore it.

I think.

Did you try pouring Beer on it?

Don't do that.

It didn't work for me.

I think it got my computer drunk because it worked funny after that.

I did scandisk. It did find a few corrupted files. Whether they were caused by the improper shutdown or they were already there from some other instance, doesn't matter, they're either fixed or gone, now.

But I still have to redo my bookmarks. :(

Yeah, I hate that too. But I guess why there's that export function. Ever so often if I've noticed I've bookmarked enough, I'll just do another export and over write the one I currently have. It takes all of 10 seconds and is good habbit to have...

This man knows what he's talking about. Though actually it's a good idea to just backup your whole profile folder. C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<some_random_numbers_and_letters>.default

Okay, where is the option in Firefox to prevent images from auto-scaling to fit in my screen? This is driving me nuts.

Type in 'about:config' (without quotes) in the firefox location bar and hit enter.

what 'about:config' does is , it lets you tweak firefox settings , many of which are not found under Tools>Options.

Once your in about:config page, type in 'browser.enable' (without quotes) in the filter bar.

when you type that, it'll show you an entry which is:

browser.enable_automatic_ image_resizing

Now, you can notice that its value is set to true and status set to 'default'

You have to change its value to false. To change it to false just double click on that entry or right click and select toggle.

Once you do that, you'll see the status is set to 'user set' and value set to false and also the entry is in 'bold' now. the reason it is in bold because now the entry is set by the user and is not a default one.

You will probably have to restart firefox... but that's how it's done. And it seems to be the most complicated thing to have typed out so far in this thread... and it's about the sizing of images... silly. Though I did have to cheat and look up the broswer.enable line. ^_^

listne to them - not me.

I power down every night when I go to bed. Power up in the morning.

As do I, but not in the morning as... well, I go to work. My computer actually doesn't usually run more than 6 hours in a day.
