SPAM! Its a basic term for posting useless stuff. THATS 1 meaning. its common internet knowledge

And the way you know whether it is useless or not is if you posted it or if another did. Many of those who complain about SPAM are just as guilty as those who they complain about. It is all very selfish and hypocritical.

I realize that I seem to be riddled with ignorant questions at the moment, but to tell the truth, this is the first website I have really gotten into, and I just don't want to mess things up for myself.

Anyway, a better meaning of spam: any post that's made that adds absolutely nothing to the conversation or are just pointless. Example posts:

1 and 2 aren't spam. They don't add much to the thread, but they do add something. 1 adds the posters feelings and 2 confirms that the poster agrees with what had been alreayd said. They don't add much, but they aren't really spam.

3 is kind of stupid, topics like it have been made without being called spam, but they are kind of spamish in that there's not really much to discuss.

Technically, spam is advertisements made by bots of users of other sites. However, spam has come to mean any sort of post that is generally irrelevant to the topic or something that is generally stupid or, like Draygone said, doesn't add anything meaningful to the thread.

Any post... any post at all that doesn't contribute to the topic at hand is spam. And that would make all three propper examples spam. Saying "LOL" and "I agree" does not contribute to the topic.

While they do display emotion, it's not important to the thread. I found quite a few things funny on this site, but I haven't posted "LOL" every time... that would get annoying. If you want to let people you agree with a topic, give reasons why or your own personal views of the topic... you know, have a conversation.

A good example is this post. I could have just said "I agree with Dray" and that's not saying much at all...

Well, we weren't completely off-topic with it. Leviathan decided to ask about spam in his own name change topic, and we answered by putting in our own views.

So there.

That right there is the whole point. Some think that if the coversation evolves it is not spam while others want to strictly ahere to the original topic in which really ultimately almost every response that doesn't directly address it is spam.

SPAM is evil! Thanks to everyone's SPAM knowledge, I shall vanquish this evil....or at least prevent myself from respawning a plague of SPAM across the forums.

The essence of SPAM is related to the essence of changing a name as both are new actions of referral to that which is not presently significant.
