SEGA ANNOUNCES THE WESTERN RELEASE OF PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2 SEGA’s Epic Free-to-Play Multiplayer Action RPG Coming to North America and Europe in Early 2013

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON – July 9th, 2012 – SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd today announced that free-to-play multiplayer action RPG Phantasy Star Online 2 will be coming to North America and Europe in 2013. For a first look at this new entry in the legendary Phantasy Star series, check out the official Phantasy Star Online 2 teaser site at www.pso2.com.

“Phantasy Star Online was a revolutionary game when it was released, and we want to make sure that its successor in the series is every bit as ambitious,” said Chris Olson, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “We look forward to introducing Phantasy Star Online 2’s unique, easy-to-access multiplayer action to the rest of the world next year!”

“The number one thing we want to provide players in Phantasy Star Online 2 is an adventure that changes every time they log in. Just as great table-top RPG experiences revolve around imaginative and unexpected encounters, we want players to consistently be surprised as they explore dungeons and undertake quests,” added Satoshi Sakai, Phantasy Star Online 2 Producer at SEGA of Japan.

Over ten years have passed since the release of the boundary-breaking Dreamcast hit, Phantasy Star Online, and SEGA is poised to continue the Phantasy Star series’ multiplayer legacy on PCs worldwide with Phantasy Star Online 2. In the Year 238, the New Era of Light, players will join a new band of Arcs in the fight against mysterious D-Arkers, embarking on another epic adventure of infinite possibilities!

Phantasy Star Online 2’s features include:

Deep sci-fi fantasy universe filled with lush landscapes, extraordinary creatures, and epic adventures
Revolutionary real-time combat and third-person action with devastating combos and counters to master
Flexible, class-based leveling system that lets players define their own play-style with distinctive melee, ranged, and magic weapon types
Randomized dungeon maps and unexpected mid-quest encounters that ensure each quest is different for each player
Deep character creation system with a nearly limitless number of potential appearances
Three degrees of humanity to experience across three unique races: the versatile Humans, spiritually-powered Newmen, and artificial CAST

Hey, it's F2P. Everyone can play!!! (And THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! Cause, I haven't been keeping much track anymore since I don't really wanna play the JP release until things settle, now I won't even have to haha.)

I am VERY excited. No idea why they waited so long(the international US+EU community filled like 2 of the JP ships at launch), so woohoo! I'm thinking I'll just wait for the US release to come out then. No point in leveling twice over, and I already had the experience of leveling a Force, Ranger, and especially Hunter to level 20. So I'm all good.:D

This will also make the task board so much easier. You get a set of tasks you choose to do in whatever order you want like "Kill this guy in this mission!", and you work up to getting a Mag from it. Its literal translation right now is the "Matter Board". It's gonna be a good lot of fun. Team Mag needs to unite when this drops.:D

Very exciting indeed! I forgot that it is free to play. I am unsure where I will play. If I can pick up the game on any platform and continue from where I left off on another then I guess it won't matter. Although, will the vita get a retail copy? I imagine it will get one in Japan but in the rest of the world, a download makes the most sense.

I am very happy indeed! I haven't following news about this game since I knew I'd get it anyway (such fanboyism!) but now I feel I must get up to date with everything! (I'm sure I'll be making a FOmar anyway)

I'll happily fan it up for PSO. I'm ashamed sometimes, but the game needs the love.:D

I have some stupid dance videos from the 2nd beta JP version I need to upload, but I may do that on a different site since you can post like one movie every once in a while on those. Hard drive spaceeee.

Also, HUnewearl for me. Though I hope I can do more things to help support the party. They have the JP summer roadmap done.
www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197297

What's interesting is that the JP Vita version will not be out until next Spring. I hope we get ours simultaneously. Something that slightly worries, the updates. While JP do always get them on time and quick, the main reason PSU failed here was that we got promised content that took forever to get. They also did this on Phantasy Star Portable 2, and Sega had a fit and didn't release PSP2 Infinity or the other Valkyria Chronicles game(I think) from "OMG people pirated our products!" after waiting like, 7 months to patch in needing a Guardian code to go online with PSP2 US.:P I hope they learn from their mistakes. Launch of PSU was awesome despite the game's flaws, for the sheer community. And then they gave us a partway finished game at full-price, and people understandably started moving for the door.

But yeah, the Vita with the JP version is as such- character dated is stored client-side, so you just use the Vita to log into the client and continue where you left off. And I'd imagine US and JP aren't going to be cross compatible with character progress, so being the old lazy fogey I am, I'll wait for the US release. I'm willing to bet that they make it a download on the PSN(or whatever they call it these days). I wish I could have a box, but that's the old fogey again. There's not even much point anymore, since Vita games never even come with a manual, just a box and some cover art.:S
