The 3DS is not my thing. Nintendo failed here by putting it out so soon, so weak, so expensive (the hardware isn't worth the original cost), and most importantly, they failed by not supporting it with, oh I don't know.... GAMES!?

Point being, Nintendo is suffering. The CEO of N took a 50% pay cut and will be cutting other millionaires pay by up to 30%. The handheld won't sell. So looking to the future, N's strategy is to sell the hardware at a loss long enough to:
a) win over the Vita ($250)
b) put more 3DS's in peoples hands faster so software can make up for the short term loss with long term sales
c) finally outsell the DSi by pricing it at the same mark

The new price point is $169.
Apparently some people on the internet are mad they paid $250 for $100 piece of hardware so N is now calling them "Ambassadors" and giving them twenty free NES roms as well as early access to GBA roms. Seeing as N never forced anyone to hand over their money, I think N is being too kind. I say let them cry.

At launch, they should've had some good games people were looking forward to out. So, yes, they did put it out too soon. Whoever is in charge of marketing and sales need to be axed. Honestly, why would you sell a piece of hardware the expensive with launch games like.... Nintendogs and other piddly dink games like that? I tell you, if they had opened with OoT, Star Fox, and a couple of other good games, this wouldn't be an issue.

It doesn't help right now that the best game for this platform right now is a port of a N64 game (albeit a great one, but still I expected more than this). Never in my life have I seen a gaming platform release with so many titles on day one... and 100% of them are terrible. There was talk about some kind of submarine game on there that wasn't too bad, but it doesn't count for much at the end of the day.

I'm starting to think the reason why Capcom pulled Megaman Legends 3 is more because the 3DS is doing so badly, and that they cut their losses before too much money was dumped into a project that wouldn't sell.

What I find to be the most funny about this is the fact that when the 3DS was announced, a good number of people (myself included) were all like, "Oh lovely, ANOTHER freakin' DS." But people were so quick to jump on their case and be all, "No! This is legit. It's the biggest innovation to handhelds to date. IT HAS TEH THUREEE DEEEEZ, TOO!" So hype build up, and upon its release, and what did we get?



I think that people calling this the Virtual Boy 2 is nothing short of poetic justice. Maybe now Nintendo will focus less on casuals and gimmicks and get back to real gaming. Just saying.

Anyone whining about this is either an idiot or naive.

Needlessly high prices and price drops not long after release as the price for being an early adopter. If you don't want to take the risk that there may be a price drop in the near future, then don't buy the brand-new tech right away and do the sensible thing and wait

If $80 is so much money that it causes you to fume and rage - maybe you shouldn't be spending $250 on a shiny toy that you really don't need and that no one is forcing you to buy.

I bought a 3DS at launch - I haven't played it because all the games out there suck (talking about originals, not ports). If Nintendo want's to charge $20 for it, I don't care. I'm not going to have my hand out asking for a refund.

Who out there really believed that the 3D aspect was anything but a silly gimmick designed to capitalize on the 3D fad? I guess the people who did believe that are the ones getting angry.

I bought the thing because I collect vintage technology, especially weird, unusual, or historic pieces. 3DS may be new now, but in 30 years, one of two things will be true:

1. The 3DS really did turn out to be this revolutionary piece of tech with historical importance.
2. The 3DS turned out to be a huge flop, will have been laughed at for decades, damaged Nintendo, etc.

Whether or not my 3DS gets placed on the shelf with my vacuum tubes, telegraph keys, and Kindles (a.k.a. The Golden Road Ahead), or on the one with my copy of ET for the Atari and other tech failures (a.k.a loser-ville) is something that only time will tell.

Either way: I win. No matter what happens, I get a nice addition to my collection with an interesting story.

That is certainly worth $250, imo.

Personally I think that, aside from the aesthetic stuff like 3D, the gimmicks are rather necessary. Gaming is going to become rather stale if it remains that they're all played the same way we've been playing them for decades. Giving new consoles more power doesn't mean anything, anymore.

That said, I think the main reason that the 3DS is failing is because Nintendo oversaturated the DS market so much (phat DS, DS Lite, DS XL, DSi) that the general public probably thinks this is just another version of the same system, just with 3D. Or if they do know, they probably don't want the new system since it's too soon since the last DS iteration. My older cousin just bought one of her daughters a DSi last Christmas, and she isn't willing to pay for yet another DS so soon.

It might get worse, if this little rumor is true.

Wait... so instead of making another model entirely (which I'm surprised they didn't do), they are making that huge thing and the only thing it does (from what I can see of the picture) is add a second analog stick?

No, this is like wii motion plus. First the add-on, then after everyone bought that, they replace it the following year with one that is built in.

Also, this'll be the first system to my knowledge in which the second analog stick is located to the right of the face buttons. Anybody else think that'll be awkward? Hope it doesn't keep that positioning in the remodel.
