Quote:
Upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D will retain its second-hand value despite preventing gamers from deleting save data, Capcom has insisted.

This morning it emerged that saved data on The Mercenaries 3D, out in the UK this Friday, cannot be reset.

Eurogamer has since verified the reports, and the inclusion of the restriction in the European version of the game.

Some speculated this was an effort on Capcom's part to combat second-hand sales.

But a Capcom spokesperson told Eurogamer this morning that the game's value will not be affected by the new feature.

"The game's value at second-hand in the UK is not affected by whether or not the game can have its data reset," Capcom said.

"Customers in the UK will not experience a reduced second-hand value should they wish to trade in their purchase."

So that's that, then. When was the last time you checked to see whether a video game allowed you to reset save data before trading it in or buying it second-hand?

Really f*cking ugly, Capcom.

I would expect something like this from EA... but not Capcom.

I'm greatly disappointed.

I'm confused. What happens if you beat the game and wanted to start over? Or is this like you unlock stuff, and you can start a new game, but you can't re-lock stuff to start afresh? It would kinda suck to get a used game, only to find you're forced to use someone else's save progress. Heck, nevermind second-hand aquirement. What if you share your DS with your brothers or something, and they wanted to have their own save file?

What I don't understand is why you just can't select "Start new game" and then just save over the old file. That's not deleting the save. That's saving over the save... which is what you do while you a just naturally progressing through the game.

I'm going with the "unlocked stuff" idea. Like imagine you got a used copy of Kirby Canvas Curse, and found that even though you could start a new game, all the red coins remain collected with DeDeDe, Meta Knight, the different line colors and such forever unlocked.

Well, to be fair, Resident Evil never had a that aspect of collection/unlocking. But this still is really uncalled for.

If the second hand value will not be reduced as Capcom keeps assuring than this seems to suggest that maybe you can in fact start anew with no forced in game unlocked changes unless somehow the retailer has to pay as much for the trade in but sell it for much less to the next buyer which doesn't seem to make much sense. I would doubt that there is a legal reason the retailer would have to buy back any particular game at all so it seems that if the trade in value would be the same as otherwise there really shouldn't be much issue with it (other than the uneasyness of having someone else's old save there). So hopefully you can just start over. I don't know.
