With this current generation of gaming, it is obvious that things are changing drastically. Some things for the good. Others? Not so much. If I could somehow influence gaming in a certain direction other than back to the way it was before... I actually have an idea that I think would be awesome. And believe it or not, it kind of revolves around the technology in the 3DS.
I don't think anyone here has ever heard of
Majestic, but basically, it is a game you play in real life (Well, you were still at home on your computer, but you'd have to interact with things on instant messenger and in some places, have to make phone calls. They might have been pre-recorded messages, but it was still a very radical idea at the time). It was around 10 years ago when it first was introduced and it died of too quickly than it should have. To better understand my idea, it would be best if you read up on that with the link above.
Now picture being in Japan with a DS and a copy of Dragon Quest 9. In japan, that game blew up. Perfect strangers would meet up in a cafe or something to collect things from each other or trade maps, and even join up in parties to take on dungeons. And in some cases, there were
actual crowds of people. Upwards to 12 or more.
Now, the 3Ds has these
augmented reality features that would bind all this stuff together. Assuming there are wifi spots pretty much everywhere (or that the 3DS could eventually tap into 3G or what not), you can use actual geo-caching to generate specific places to go to with their 3DS to progress through an ARG like Majestic.
Here's an example of the full package. let's say you are at your home and started a new Majestic style game on your 3Ds. You use one of those augmented reality cards to define your home/base or whatever. Maybe you can find some items or what not that are hidden around your place (like the targets were in the 3DS arrow game), and you eventually hit a point where you need to go outside in the actual world. So lets say you put the 3DS in your pocket in sleep mode and head out to lunch with your buddies. All the sudden, the 3DS buzzes or beeps to indicate that there is a treasure, plot point, or random encounter close by you (I assume you'd keep a few special augment cards with you and places them as directed by the game). You open it up and there's a enemy. But not just that, there's someone IRL already fighting it with HIS 3DS. Imagine jumping in and helping him with the fight. You look through your 3DS and see an actual orc or something as you progress through the battle. And after the battle you can talk to the guy you just played with... trade items or exchange tags, you know... the ideas here are limitless.
I've never been great with words, so I don't know how well I get my ideas across, but the way I picture this, it could be something so incredibly awesome.
