Final fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has stated rescently that a final fantasy 7 remake is very unlikely:

If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we’d very much like a go at it! But even Final Fantasy XIII has taken over three and a half years to create. If we were to recreate final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we’d imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together! So it’s looking pretty unrealistic! But if any such situation came about by any remote chance, then yes, we’d do it!

Here is the original article.

For the life of me, I STILL can't understand why that stupid PS3 graphics demo lead so many people to thinking there was some PS3 re-make of FF7. Maybe this will shut some people up. Because seriously? Don't fix what's not broken. Final Fantasy 7 is just fine the way it is... and you KNOW that SE wouldn't be able to re-make that game without changing a few things... and THAT right there would drive the fan-boys into a net rage unlike that of xbox live FPS trolls.

And you might argue that they've been re-making all the old Final Fantasy titles, so why wouldn't they do 7? Well, mostly because none of the hard core FF7 players have even PLAYED the originals. Though, I would be lying if I did admit that a FF6 re-make for the DS would be pretty awesome.

But seriously, this whole FF7 re-make bs has been going on far too long. And I'm glad someone has FINALLY said something.

Because...FF VII makes people J.I.M.P. It NEEDS to be updated, Lanti.

I'm pretty sure Square Enix has been saying this for the last 5 or so years. Why anyone would even remotely think a remake would have happened is beyond me.

Although I'm a bit less doubtful that it could be done gracefully....after all, while not perfect, I think Advent Children was pretty great.

lol.

The word 'need' is way over-used these days.

That's because FF7 had TOWNS and EXPLORATION!

I agree, FF7 doesn't need to be remade. The old-school graphics, over-the-top animations and relatively speedy battle sequences gives the game an arcade feel which would be lost if they tried remaking it to their current standards.

Downplaying a game you haven't even played?

Get out of here.

Lets take a look at this:

Game - Development time
------------------------------------
FF7 (PS1) - 3 years
FF8 (PS1) - 3 years
FF9 (PS1) - 4 years
FF10 (PS2) - 2 years
FF12 (PS2) - 5 years

.. and we all know FF13's time.

Compare the graphical differences between 12 and 10. Now 13 and 12.
Compare the world differences between 12 and 10. Now 13 and 12.

Don't even try to use that as an argument again. 12 had all the things you're complaining about, and still took forever even with previous experience of the development team on the system. FF13 has no precedent on the PS3.

FF12 also had a completely revamped battle system.

As does 13. That's also irrelevant to your argument.

7's was not a fresh system.

Okay, fine. I just think FF13 sounds like crap. But explain to me why an FF7 remake would take so long.

Edit. Meant to say FF13. So edited.

I get the feeling you missed the point entirely.

Their (and all other video game company's) entries to a system take longer after they've put one out for a system already. This is because, whether they like to admit it or not, they're not entirely sure what a system is capable of.

In remaking FF7 to suit FF13's and the PS3's more modern capabilities, they would push even harder than they did for FF13. This is true for, virtually, every single video game company.

They would also be doing it with a smaller development team, as they would have more employees in positions to push out other fresh titles.

There's also the fact that FF7's battle system was unnecessarily robust and would be damn near impossible to faithfully remake on the PS3's system in a way appropriate to reflect its capabilities. By robust, though, I'm referring to the ridiculous amount of options you have due to the (imo) not well planned Materia system. It was fine back then, but now something as cluttered as an end game FF7 battle menu would just be frowned upon given current standards.

Yeah, I did miss the point. Now that you've explained it, I understand. Especially with the smaller team thing.

I personally would like to see every FF game remade for PSP, or even just ported and touched up like with Star Ocean:TSS as SO: Second Evolution.

Or perhaps just visuals enhanced for 720p XBLA. Keep the game engines in tact.

I never expected a PS3 remake for all the reasons said since the days of PS3 launch, but as a dream, it would be nice to play through them again with bonus content sprinkled in.

I haven't been able to play 12, and I probably won't be able to play 13.
Then again, I would certainly find a way to be 'able' to if I were all that interested in them, and I certainly refuse to be interested in a 'remake' of 7.

Final Fantasy, for me, it seems, will remain 4-10.

Honestly? Final Fantasy 7 is a good enough game that it doesn't need a re-make. If you have a desire to play FF7, play the PS1 version.

Beyond that, it's kinda pointless to remake a game that's still playable on current-gen systems.

I don't think that's true. Look at Lunar. If you ignore the Saturn, its been remade twice now and I have all of them (including the Saturn). Well, I do not actually have the PSP one, but it comes out tomorrow. Then there's Star Ocean and the rumor of Abe's Oddysee for xbla, as well as all the Persona games, Wild Arms, Duke Nukem 3D and so on. All re-released on current gen systems and PS2.

I know that FF7 is on PSN, but I would still get the remake of all PS1 era FF's (like Tactics). I don't need this gen console standards. I think the handheld market is the one to hit oldschool remakes on.

You know, I never actually played FF7. I kind of hate that the game is ruined for me now.
