Woo, a version of Chrono Trigger I'll actually be able to enjoy!
(The load times of the PS1 version ruined it for me, despite the awesome anime cutscenes. Hope those make it into this version.)

GAH, NOW I HAVE TO BUY A DS! The emulated verison I have on my PSP (don't worry, I have a hard copy... it's legit) is rather laggy. And who knows what they'll use the second screen for.

Ah well, there's quite a few other games that I'll want to pick up.

*sigh*

Man though... can't wait.

It's not a remake.

http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/chrono-trigger.html

Skrew you, S-E. You would've had me sold if it were a VC game, or if it really were a remake, but I'm not likely to spend $40 on a handheld port like this.

That's kind of a shame. Though, I'm still interested what they'll do with the second screen. Aslo, if it means I can get a portable version of CT that isn't a laggy emulation... then I'm game.

Besides, seeing as this is pushing me over the top to finally get a DS, I've got other games I'm interested in as well.

Okay, I'll probably be hijacking this thread.

Quote:
Well, that didn't take long. After Square Enix quietly launched a teaser website seemingly devoted to bringing fan fave Chrono Trigger to the Nintendo DS, we've managed to scrape our jaws off the floor just in time to see that the company has confirmed plans for the title, and that the game will ship in time for North American gamers to pull it out of their stockings this holiday season.

With the original having shipped some 2.5 million copies the world over, Squeenix calls the portable take on the 1995 SNES role-playing classic "newly revamped," promising a new dungeon and wireless play of some sort. Touch screen support is also promised, something we're getting plenty of practice at as we paw at our computer screens in eager anticipation.

Wireless play? Do you think that could mean Co-op? Omg...

Is there anything else that wireless play can mean?

Well...

1. Item tradeing. Most likely the easyist thing todo.
2. Vs mode with your charicters. An other easy thing to do.
3. Play as the bad guys vs good guy battles. Player 2 as any enemy in the game with player one as the main hero's. Again easy but unlikely to happen.
4. Co-op leaveing everyone to move as they wish....semi easy almost useless for the game and not likely gonna happen. (If no one knows once a battle starts the players will walk through anything to get to the battle. So the game can't get stuck....if I'm right. If I'm wrong its an easy fix.)

I'll pay $40 for it- why, you might ask?

Because there are new features being implemented, because I love the game, and because the Chronicles port was terrible because of horrendous load times.

I want to legally play some CT again.:D

Good luck, I wish you all to get what you want from the game.

But I caution buying a DS for it. Don't buy into marketing (using the Chrono name) if it really isn't worth the bucks.

I myself would confirm everything before buying any of it and by confirm, I mean wait until the game has actually shipped.

I'm gonna wait to find out just what they're planning on doing with this. If the special features are impressive and not just throw-ins (and perhaps, if they include those animated cutscenes), I might consider it. Otherwise, I'll stick with the big screen and find myself a copy of the SNES version on eBay.

I'm a blind fangirl for the older Square RPGs...

Another reason I'm doing it no matter what is- if they do remake it, it'll be FFIII-FFIV DS quality and a whole new perspective, and another thing is I believe it was already confirmed to be 2D still, just with an extra dungeon and WiFi features.

One more area of interest, I'm wondering if this does extremely well if the bleak Chrono series future can be saved. LOL almost ties in with the game.

.... And the animated cutscenes. Sorry, everyone, but, they sucked, especially the one that came after the ending credits.

Still, all of this talk about Chrono Trigger is making me want to go play it right now. Excuse me.

I'm not JUST getting it for Chrono Trigger. There are definately other games I'm quite interested in. And even if it's just a direct port and the second screen is blacked out and never used, I'm fine with it. If I can play a portable version of Chrono Trigger that isn't a laggy emulation, than I'm totally game.

Ah, yes, another reason not to like the PS1 version. The music and sound suffered a bit.

Hey SK, may I ask why you didn't care for the animated cutscenes? Aside from possibly how choppy the animation was, even for animé.

... Well, there was that; the incredible choppiness. But also, it just did not make any sense to me to have a cutscene showing something happening out-of-game, and then that same something in-game immediately after.

.... Okay, I don't know if I was able to be elaborate enough by saying it that way, so I'll use an example. You know the really awesome scene from the original SNES version where you are about to go into the Magic Cave, and in order to open the entrance, Frog raises the Masamune as it lights up and shoots a blue ray all the way into the sky with a cool sound effect to go along with it in order to, in a truly awesome way, foretell an equally awesome sword move that is about to be performed on the part of Frog, whereupon he flourishes the sword, coolly walks up to the rock wall, and leap slashes down through the rock several feet like it might as well have been nothing but air. Well, in the PSX version, you still see this scenario occur, ... but only after you already see the same friggin' thing happen in an animated cutscene just beforehand. ... As if the new cutscene could have done the original scenario of Frog's mad skills justice, anyway, showing the same thing over twice is just unnecessary and stupid. I mean, it simply doesn't make sense. If the guys over at Squaresoft just had to do something new so badly with the version of Chrono Trigger that they were going to release on the PSX by adding in these lame and choppy cutscenes, then why didn't they actually find a way to replace the original scene of focus with the cutscene instead of just throwing the cutscene into the fray so that you see the same thing happen twice in a row?

... On top of that, what ticked me off more than anything was seeing what I believe to be one of the most legendary introduction sequences to an RPG ever in Chrono Trigger just hacked out completely and replaced with another of those (and I am going to use Lantis terminology here) craptastic animated sequences. The only good part to me in the PSX intro was the very first few moments, really, where you see what I am guessing to be the inside of Chrono's room and he picks up a picture frame depicting himself and all five of his friends. The rest was just lame. If something is good the first time around, why not just stick with it? ... *sigh* And how about that equally lame ending cutscene, huh? Come on, Chrono and Marle walking the aisle? LAAAAAAAAAME ....

.... Sorry, I know I ranted for much too long when I am sure you meant only to ask a simple question, Draygone, but, please allow me to say this one last thing: the SNES version of Chrono Trigger to me was a 9.75 on a scale of one to ten; it is truly a legendary masterpiece of a game, I believe, about as near to perfect as any game will ever get. And on the other hand, with the haphazard addition of these animated cutscenes that in and of themselves weren't at all impressive, anyway, the slow load times (which by itself I could have easily overlooked), and the seeming watering down of a few of the sound effects and background music scores, I give the PSX version only a 9.00, flat. In other words, this game dropped almost a full tenth of the scale just by hopping platforms. The very bottom line: when an RPG is great to begin with, don't try to change a thing about it when you want to put it on later-generation systems in order to allow those who came into video games late the opportunity to play that RPG and experience its greatness for themselves as well. Just direct port it, straight up. That's what I think, anyway.

O_o

I didn't hate them THAT much. And the anime cutscene and in-game cutscene thing I think was kind of out of their control. I don't think that Square was going to be able to delete the in-game cutscene since it was a port... but was able to splice in the anime scenes.

Actually, I would have been a little upset if they were to take out the in-game custscene competely... because I liked them as well. So even if they COULD delete them, I think I'd still like to see them.

Maybe they should have included an option to turn on or off the anime scenes for people like you. But if it's any consolation, in the end, I'm going to say the same thing as you when I say that the PSX version is inferior to the SNES version. Choppy animated scenes, long load times... and I think the worst thing is horribly replaces/changed sound effects. Nothing sounded as cool as it use to, and that bugged me a good bit.

Personally, I think the DS version isn't going to have load times, anime scenes, or changed sound effects... so here's hoping.

Is the PSX version titled exactly the same as the SNES version or is it a "special edition", or "director's cut"?

I hate when they bother touching up stuff that wasn't broke in the first place. It would be even more unforgivable if they didn't re-title it because then it allows (hopes?) the culture will forget the original and says to the most recent version, "now, YOU are Chrono Trigger"!
