So, last night SK and I dove head-first into the survival horror game of this year last night around 10 pm. It was well after 1 am before we were able to turn it off.

This game is brilliant. If you like RE4... you have no excuse not to get this game. When I say like RE4... I generally mean the feel of the game. The over the shoulder view feels very comfortable and you'll get use to fighting very quickly. This game feels like what you'd get if you mixed Resident Evil 4 with Bioshock... and gave it a space theme. And it works very well. The story is great and pretty early on you get put in a possition to where you are just left standing alone with that "Oh sh*t... now what?" feeling.

To better get a grasp of how good this game is, I suggest watching the first like... 15 minutes of this video from Noobtoob's episode 115:

<center><object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KEfKz_t1tHc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KEfKz_t1tHc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object></center>

And I second everything they have said. The battle feels great, and your two melee moves look and feel like they'd do allot of damage. SK was able to get in there and floor an enemy with this haymaker and then stomp of it's limbs, squee! And shooting has to be strategic. Like Yuzo in the video said, you can dump a clip into their chest and it not phase them. But there are times when they jump right infront of you and you gut instinct is to shoot at the larger mass, not precision aim at limbs. One thing that Noobtoob didn't mention is your sub abilites. Yeah you can shoot (and change the alignment of your gun, which is awesome), and you can bash and stomp your way through... but you have these sub abilites. The first of which is stasis. You can slow things down. Enemies, doors... anything. The only other one we have is a telekinesis or anti-grav or whatever. I'm sure there are others, but those add even more depth to battle and puzzle solving.

Other mechanics in the game like the store is also very well done. Think of the store as like the dirt merchant guy from Reisdent Evil 4 (I'd laugh my ass off if the caption under store was, "What'cha buyin'?"). It has pretty much the same functionality. But unlike Resident Evil 4... actually using those items and equipment... it doesn't pause the game. It's all live. If you need to use health, you can't pause the game and take the time to use it. Like in real life, the enemies isn't going to give you the time to do so.

Btw, the space station is unique and scary as hell. You honestly feel like you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with little to no hope of living... scratch that, if it wasn't a game that you knew had an ending, you'd feel abysmally hopeless. But there are even times in the game were you just have to sit back and look in awe. There's a time when you go out of an air-lock onto the ouside of the space station. That's it... you are now in space. Just looking out at the near-by debris and the single plannet and sun out there... it's awesome. But you can't really enjoy it all too long because well... there's no air. And your suit has a timer on it... after that goes out, you die. Fortunately they give you a pretty large sum at the beginning (which you can upgrade... which I will talk about in a second). Also, there's not gravity sections as well which were done oh so well. You'll even fight enemies in no G.

I just couldn't help but laugh as after a fight in zero G, I ended up on the wall... To SK, I walked up to a weird looking hole in the floor that looked like you could interact wtih it. He's like... dude, what's that on the floor.

It was the door. I jumped to the left (which was the ground) and there was the door out. Very cool. But afterwards I had to walk back through the no-air part again. Well, with all the extra air I had, I was going to poke around. There was plenty of time... and there was some stuff to pick up. I'm sitting there collecting stuff and soaking in the environment and as I was standing there a f*cking enemy laces into me... BUT I DIDN'T HEAR A THING!

...

Oh yeah... space. No sound exsists in space. The detail they place in this game is just great. You could hear your character yelp in pain, but he could probably hear himself inside his own suit... but nothing else. Shooting the gun... the enemy screaming, the sound of stamping his freaking head off... prefectly silent.

I guess the last thing I'm going to touch on is the upgrading. You can upgrade just about anything. Guns, your stasis stuff, air, your suit, your health... They have almost a skill tree looking grid to it. You collect these nodes, and you can weld these nodes onto your equipment and upgrade a parameter. You can give your weapon the ability to hold a larger clip, reload faster, shoot faster, or just do more damage. You can aid a bigger air container to your suit, or more HP to it as well. Stasis can upgrade how long something will be slowed down, how many times you can use it... how often. As you can see, this game will probably never be played the same way twice.

And I don't think I mentioned it had multiple difficulties: Easy, Medium, and Hard. The replay value on this game is actually quite high. The achivements on the 360 copy will keep you pretty busy as well. One is dismember 1000 limbs. O_o

Survival horror fans... get this game, and I promise you won't be dissapointed.

Noobtoob is the best!! It coinvinced me to buy Dead Space last weekend. The game actually SCARES you at times. The begining before you have a gun something happens that's terrifying. I got so pumped! The whole time you play this game you're on the edge of your seat. Best game I've played in a while. It's decently long too.

12 chapters... and I'm only 2. This game is freaking epic. I'm currently on easy, but will probably tackle normal not soon after beating it. And of course the achievment for beating hard not going to go un-earned.

Also, glad to see someone else here at the Mag watching Noobtoob. It's made of awesome.

My first thought when I read the topic smaller title was "Power Rangers in Space", and now I can't seem to take this game seriously. Thank you, Lantis.

Oh wow... I didn't know the PS3 version has Trophies. I was under the impression that the first quarter of 09 is when trophies went into full effect. Awesome.

Does the PS3 have a trophy for dissmembering 1000 limbs?
