I was listening to random songs in FF8's OST, and man, are most of these songs really serious-sounding. Even the lighter fare has some type of serious, epic-feeling sound.

Oh, by the way, I really love Fisherman's Horizon.

... You thought so, too? My vote for darkest-sounding theme was the one that plays just before you enter Ultimecia's palace (where you found the slain white SeeD's; I do not feel like inserting spoiler tags, because, if you haven't played Final Fantasy VIII by now ....).

... But, I think the theme from Trabia Garden is the best. Not a dark theme, but, has quite a note of sadness to it.

A spoiler's a spoiler. I'm sure we'd still get in trouble if we just blurted out that [spoiler]Aerith gets killed in FF7[/spoiler]. Though, what you mentioned isn't really much of a spoiler. It doesn't ruin anything.

Anyway, on-topic. I loved some of FF8's music. But while it's basically got no happy-go-lucky themes, I find a few songs more "boring" or "annoying" than I do "dark". I do see your point, though. And yes, a lot of the music is epic in some way. My own personal favorite:
