We expect to hear people say, "OMG YOU NOOBZ" on this one, because it seems absolutely preposterous, but we're not one to pass a good video up on the net. What we have here is the possibility that someone's running a Super Mario Bros. emulation on Fedora through their PlayStation 3.

What's there to put doubt into the whole thing? Simply put, you don't see enough gameplay to verify it, and the camera pans downward to show the PS3 as the game segues to the title screen and into the code on the television. In the end, it's going to be up to you to decide just how real it is, but if any of you can provide confirmation on whether this is a hoax or authentic, then we'd really appreciate it.

Of course, don't expect to see an emulator of the virtual console to pop up on the PS3 any time soon. You can imagine the legal repercussions of something like that, and frankly, we'd rather not see lawsuits about our readers popping up on the daily news. For now, enjoy the YouTube video put up by PowerofJurai, and help us get some answers.

Just like I predicted it since it was bound to happen anyway. The ps3 will get more emulators. This is why I like the ps3, someone will create emulators to play all of nintendo's roms & iso's except the wii's games. Look at the psp, their firmware requires an update just like the ps3 but the thing is the hackers are breaking into them after its release. There may not be any good games out yet for the psp, homebrew is the real interest. I'll be watching on this.

Well its true, homebrew is the highest psp apps. You can play the nes, gba, snes, sega, mame, sega cd, ps1(WIP), n64(Still a WIP) games. I just can't wait for someone to make an eboot(maybe called something else for ps3) so I can play the ultimate fighting game. Offtopic: That guy needs a new tv.

Well since you could install Linux on the PS2 (of course there was an officially licensed kit of this) this really is not a big surprise. Since you can run Linux on almost anything with a processor, some ram, a video card (of sorts), and probably a hard drive (of course with the know how to write device drivers). Of course this could have very well been run on the 360 he had as well. Until this becomes an official addon to the systems I don't care much. People have come up with all kinds of hacks and mods to the existing systems, and with the power of these new ones, no real surprise they're doing it again (though the ability to program and play those programed GBA games on a GBA is still pretty enticing using flash cartridges).

I imagine eventually some company, or group of opensource developers, will be interested in making an OS for the PS3 to see what the cell processor might have to offer consumer applications (though it may not be anywhere near as powerful as a Core 2 Duo, it's still an interesting beast to program for).

Of course what is surprising, if this is true, is how fast they were able to do this. So either they're very good at what they do, or the PS3 is the easiest system to program for ever.

As for homebrew Microsoft has already come up with a system for that using their XNA studio. While not just anyone can pick it up and program for it (kind of like actually programming in anything) it does offer almost anyone the ability to put up a game on their system, and probably Live for a small fee. Not sure if the VC will do anything like this (probably not as far as the IDE) but it would be a smart move for Nintendo I think. Of course I'm sure Nintendo will use the VC to allow smalltime developers to make games for it, just maybe not the general public. So homebrew is already here through official means, though not on the PS3.

Not yet, it has only been short amount of time since its release. I think I can find a link to someone installing Windows Xp OS on the ps3.

This is only the beginning for ps3 homebrew. Just like the psp, it started off slow now look at it now. More apps, games, and emu's than the psp library.

Two things.

1) Graphics suck.

2) He has a PS3, but a crappy TV. Someone call Sony, apparently everyone didn't go out and buy a HDTV for their PS3.

Well it is just a beta, the full release will look 50x's better than that. Just look at the psp's first snes emu, it sucked and was very slow. The music didn't play for some of the levels. But as months progressed the emulator got better. Even now the emulator can play almost every snes game.

I was joking because everyone is saying how good the PS3's graphics are, so I played the ignorant nintendo fan and criticised it for it's bad graphics, even though it's a emu.
