I agree. The dot.HACK games would have been just the right type for multiplayers! It's almost amazing that they didn't think of doing that already with the PS2 series, eh?

And, Lord knows, as what happens just a little too frequently in dot.HACK, you'd never have to worry about the other characters in your party fighting in an inconsistent and/or sloppy manner if other players were actually controlling them.

*disgusted sigh* ... Sometimes you as Kite would be left to the complete mercy of the enemy simply because of the outright bumbling of your other party members, despite the commands you gave them.

That's why you always choose exactly what spell they should use. Yeah it's annoying but then you don't have to worry about the AI being retarded and not using the spell the enemy is weak to, even though you'll see them telling you what spell to use.

Of course if it were an MMO I probably would not have played it, since I'm not too fond of MMOs. At this point I think it would only work as an MMO if the characters in the games and series were NPCs in the game. Since you definitly couldn't have everyone trying to be one of the characters. Of course I hope if it went to an MMO they could improve the game from just being a simple dungeon crawler, as the gameplay was very meh. By the end I was only playing to see the story (something a lot of MMOs lack).

So while it could work as an MMO I don't see what would distinguish it from all the others, other than being in the .hack world. Really I think that's what made it popular was that it was not truly an MMO. That gave it some kind of uniqueness that it wouldn't have had, had it been online.

You could be right about the dot.HACK series' popularity arising mostly from its being MMO-like without actually being so.

I personally enjoyed playing dot.HACK for its MMO atmosphere without actually having to insert my soul into the PS2 console along with the game disc and go online. And, yeah, by the time I got to Quarantine, I had rather gotten a little bored with the gameplay and became interested pretty much in just how the story was going to end. (I mean, come on, a man can only take having to fight alongside Blackrose for so long. I'm just glad there weren't as many times that you were forced to take *Piros* along in your party. Ick.)

If it played anything like the games, then no.

But it could be a good MMORPG if they recreated everything like the anime, but probably using Phantasy Star Online style gameplay.
