So this is something I kind of thought about doing for a long time, but never really thought I'd put the effort into. After the 7th generation of consoles, I exclusively switched to PC gaming. I'm very likely to stay there now. So from the second generation, to the seventh, I've got a really concise list of consoles that I played as a console gamer. I also own all of these... most of which don't work. But I think what really pushed me to go through with this was a video by Adam Savage that went up not long after his hour-long presentation at Maker Faire.

So, just for fun, I thought I'd throw up my progress to show you guys how it's going. The idea is to have a backlit display for each console that I played as a console gamer.

Here is the display, after having the risers for the LEDs I'll install as well as the mounting screws for the consoles:

The consoles mount through holes I've drilled into the back of them:

To make sure they lined up perfectly, I took a piece of paper and marked the holes, placed it on the board where I wanted it, and taped it down so I could begin drilling.

So after having done this for all the consoles, here's what they look like without any of the LED wiring, sanding, or staining of the wood, just to get an idea of what this might look like:

The spacing isn't the best, but I was having a hard time with having an odd number of consoles. The ones I'm mounting are, again, based on the ones that I played up to the seventh generation. I also have controllers to mount, which will go underneath the respective console. The next step is going to be to sand and stain the piece, then I can move to wiring the LEDs. And once the controllers are also mounted, I should be good to hang it up.

I'm not sure which is more sad - you leaving console gaming, or the fact that PC gaming has become a respectable alternative. Though to be fair, the only new consoles I see myself getting at this point are Nintendo's.

Looking forward to seeing the end result of this project. You should put a Chrono Trigger gate in there while you're at it. =P

It took a lot of time, but I've finally finished it.

Here's what it was looking like as I was wiring the LEDs:

And this is what it looked like after I finished wiring:

All that was left was to screw down the controller mounts and hang the thing on the wall, this is how it turned out:

It's got several flaws in it as I'm really not that great with wood working all that jazz, but I'm generally happy with it. It may be a little gaudy and in a few years I might thing it's a bit too cringey to keep on the wall, but for now I like it.

I find neither of these things sad.

That looks really nice! :)

If I didn't see myself still playing my consoles even after all the time I've had them, (Alsp, they all still work as well) I'd almost consider doing the same. :)

I actually ended up having to buy a few consoles broken off of like, ebay. But they were incredibly cheap at least.
