Its because even at 600 dollars, they're still losing money with every one they sell. each system costs well over 1000 dollars to make. They won't start profiting off the system itself until the technology used to make it comes down in cost.

Rather than profiting off the hardware, sony will bring in money from game licensing (publishers have to pay sony for every disc of every game they sell), and the games sony itself develops and publishes.

So why did they do it then? If there going to lose money? Did they not know this?

For a few reasons:

Sony owns the blu-ray format. By making it an integral part of the PS3, they can use the system to push the format, much like the PS2 helped make DVDs more successful.

Losing money now doesnt matter much if the system is successful. The more systems that sell, the cheaper it becomes to manufacture it. eventually they will profit from system sales, as long as it isnt a failure. Microsoft never made a cent off the original X box, but the money they poured into establishing themselves as a gaming company paid off eventually. the 360 is a huge success.

Losing money on systems at launch isnt a new thing at all. The PS2 was sold at a loss at first, and that didnt seem to hurt sony in the long run at all.

Hunh. I never would have imagined that some consoles had actually required more money to be manufactured in the first place than what they could be sold for.

Yeah, I would not want to take that gamble.

The 360 is a huge success? I'm sorry, but where do you live? I have quite the plethora of aquantinces and Very few have a 360... and those that don't have one, don't want one. Besides, I haven't seen too many 360 threads around here lately... er, scratch that... I mean, at all.

Pretty much every game can be played on another console, and the ones that aren't are not that great. Microsofts best game is still Fable... and even that can be played on PC.

Please do not bring the PC into this. Not everyone has a PC capable of playing games that the 360 can. Besides that, the PC market is very different than the console market.

Anyway, I see the Blu-Ray as a potential failure. The DVD was such a huge jump from VHS it's not funny, but so far the only thing I'm hearing about Blu-Ray movies is that it has higher-quality picture (probably not that noticeable without an expensive TV) and the menus are more interactive (so it's one step closer to being The Bouncer).

Yeah, I hate playing PC games. I like using a controler. I know they have controlers that plug into the PC. But its not the same..

I wasn't saying anything like PC's are console killers. I'm saying that the best game ever for Xbox/Xbox 360 can be played by other means...

Actually the PC version has more content that the xbox version.

But I'd rather have a PC with gaming capabilities than an Xbox 360 anyway...

Oh wait... I do.

I said the 360 is a success because it is. it's sales numbers are great, even if you dont know anyone who wants one.

I don't know what makes number of sales determine how great the system is.... Reguardless of the console.

I'm sure that SPAM (as in the processed "meat") sells alot. Does it make it great? Hell no.

PS3 won't sell much (because Sony was stupid in not waiting to launch till later)... but I am sure as hell getting one. I know it will be great if nothing than just hearing the titles coming out.

But in light of the sticky resently put up, I'm going to try and let it go. It all boils down to personal prefrence.

I can't remember witch thread it was, but we were talking about the USB ports for the Wii... Well there they are. All two of them. Let's just hope you don't have your Wii in a entertainment center cradled in the corner which would make it hard to get to the back of the unit.

If indeed the next RM is going to be for Wii... I see people trying to get a keyboar in and out of their not being very fun.

Its a little off topic but I know why spam sells so well. Its because you can keep it for 10 years. And as long as you don't open the can.. You can still eat it.

Anyways.. Hale Wii! Wii is the best. *Kitty likes PS3* Yey! for wii. :P

I couldn't help but notice that red port over there towards the bottom of the unit... it looks like a fire wire port. Anyone know what Nintendo might use that for? Digital Camera's maybe?

If it's anything like my setup, the keyboard just stays there. That's what I do with the PS2.

And two sounds like a fine number to me....Just how many will the ps3 have? And does it really make a difference?

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't need any more than 2 USB ports on any console. I only have 2 on my laptop (Which is my MAIN computer), and I get by without any trouble at all. In fact, I haven't even thought of it being a problem, the thought of only two USB ports to me sounds silly. It makes me want to laugh.

The way I see it, if a MMORPG or multiplayer game is ever even made for the Wii, all I would need is one USB Keyboard, and that would still leave 1 port left for a camera/microphone, and if you needed more, there will prolly be a spliter you can buy, assuming regular ones won't work (which they probably will).

I wouldn't say the Wii is going to flop. I actually think it's completely possible it'll trump the PS3 in terms of sales. Not only are there a lot more being made, but they are cheaper, and there are a lot of Nintendo fans or people that will buy it simply because it's "new".

Plus, from what I have heard, numerous people are crazed about it simply because it has the online market for retro games.

I'm buying a Wii as soon as it comes out, I'm a Nintendo Loyalist. I'm not a PS3-basher, but I don't see anything about it that's really interesting or worthy of spending $500-$600 dollars on. Graphics? I could really care less. Hardware? What do I care if it has "Blu-ray" or blue-tooth? Games? I don't think so.

For me, Wii's the winner.

We aren't talking about how GREAT a system is, that is opinion and will differ from person to person. However, there is no doubt that the 360, thus far at least, is a success in terms of sales.

You've got to be joking. PS3 has more titles than Xbox 360 and Wii COMBINED. And it's not like some off-brand titles either.

Well no duh... the 360 has been out for how long, now? It's the only next gen console even OUT right now. It's not like people have a choice at the moment (that that is very soon to change).

None of the launch games or upcoming games interest me in the least. I'm more of a RPG guy myself, and there hasn't been any RPG's for the PS3 that catch my eye besides FFXIII. However, considering how long it took them to come out with XII, I'm not expecting XIII any time soon. I will admit though when XIII release nears, I'll go buy a PS3, no matter how much it costs.

I'm not expecting the price to go down at all, but if it did before XIII's release, I'd consider that a major plus.

There's 2 USB ports in the back, and there's possibly more behind the door on the front. anyone have an image of that door open?

As for how many games the PS3 has, currently it doesnt have any. An upcoming game library doesnt matter at all, since titles can be cancelled (From Software cancelled all their PS3 games except for Armored Core 4). it only counts when it's on the shelf.
