I reserve my judgment on the final product, but I am glad they're at least trying it.

It's just a matter of perspective really. I don't feel battle was awe inspiring in the Lufia series. I doubt I'd be so accepting if someone were to try to change FF7's battle system or say, Vagrant Story's battle system.

That's what I was trying to say. Lufia 1's battle system was god awful... Lufia 2's was just a generic RPG turnbased battle system.

Now, if they were to remake Lufia: The Legend Returns, I would definitely be disappointed if they changed it's battle system, because it was very very unique.

The website was recently updated with a profile on Tia, an updated Story section, and a new article in the "System" section.

I have a translation of the profile on Tia:

Quote:
Ehehe~. Just as I've thought, I'm not useless~.

Character voice:
Toyosaki Aki

Profile:
Age: 17 years old
Height: 158 centimeters
Weapon: Trunk with built-in hook shot
Wave Device: Steel wave device
Attack type: Technique type

Paragraph:
She is Maxim's childhood friend, a tool shop's kanbanmusume (kanbanmusume is apparently a "pretty daughter who attracts boys to parents' shop"). Having lost both parents early in an accident, she has grown into a jealous, lonely, and spoiled child (might be slightly wrong). Should she embrace her love towards Maxim (unsure)? She thinks staying close almost always brings great pain (unsure). Therefore, she forcibly becomes a party member. Her weapon is a wave device attached to her own specially remodeled trunk. While trying to balance her concerns (?) about Maxim, her heart's destination is...

From Tia's trunk, variously colored things fly out!

Left screenshot:

Tia:
T, travel what?!
To a place without me, two people intend to go on a trip!?
What is this? An elopement of love?!

Right screenshot:

Tia:
This is Parcelyte. What a nice town~ (or neighborhood?).
Moreover, this is a city.
It's very different from Elcid.

Some new pictures were released recently, Including pictures of Dekar and Artea.

Image

Guy. I still don't like how he looks.

Image

Artea. I'm really liking how he looks. He looks like a cross between Alucard and Cecil.

Image

Dekar. I don't like that his hair was changed from purple to white, but he still looks cool and cocky like he does in the original.

Image

Just some random artwork that is significant because I think the woman in the top right corner is supposed to be Iris.

Good to know.

So there has been a lot of speculation going on about what the party will be in the game.

On a page in the magazine article that I recently put up, it says that there is a "party of 6", but the original Lufia 2 had 7 characters. So, I believe that Lexis will not be a playable character in this version of the game, seeing as how he is the only important character that we have not seen.

The game's website was significantly updated recently.

It has been confirmed that the game will have 6 playable characters (Lexis is not playable). And, Dekar and Tia will not be leaving the party. Every character's page is now on the "Character" section of the site.

The story has been updated with some stuff I can't understand.

If you go to the "System" section, one of the tabs is for "Wave Devices", which shows videos of Maxim, Selan, and Tia's Wave Devices (Cross Dash, Icicle Blade, and Hook Shot respectively).

You can also see images of Guy's "Trial Hammer", Artea's "Javelin Rain", and Hydekar's Wave Device which I believe is his "Blast Master" ability he uses in the original.

Also, if you watch the videos of the Wave Devices, you can hear some music in the background, all of which are almost the exact same songs as they were in the original. In Maxim's, you can hear Battle Theme #1 (Which is surprising, since battles no longer take place on a separate screen), and you can hear the Tower Theme. In Selan's, you can hear the Tower Theme again, and also the Mountain Theme. In Tia's, you can once again hear the Tower Theme, and then you can hear the Cave Theme.

In the "Story" section, the last tab has images from important character scenes. Maxim's shows a battle with Gades in Parcelyte, Tia's shows her holding Maxim and Selan's son, Guy's shows him and Maxim dueling, Artea's talk about the Dual Blade and about Karyn, Dekar's I think show the scene with Idura in Bound Kingdom, and the scene at the end of Bound Kingdom's cave when he asks Maxim how to open the door in the last room.

Some big updates recently, actually several characters have been announced and added to the site: Iris, Idura, and Jimmy & Jamie (Berty & Bart).

Anyway, several new videos were added within the past few days:

A new trailer, that includes the songs For the Savior, and The Last Duel from the Lufia 2 soundtrack, all remixed, which I think sound great:

Artea Gameplay, includes the "basement" music and The Turret Forgotten from Lufia 2:

Guy Gameplay (notice how the sound effect that plays when he moves the platform is the exact same as it was in Lufia 2 when you moved a block):

Hydekar (Dekar) Gameplay, contains a remixed Battle Theme from Lufia 1 (Which I guess means we can assume more Lufia 1 music will be present), and the submarine theme from Lufia 2:

Also, for anyone who has played Lufia 2 and knows about the Ancient Cave, this is for you:

After seeing the new trailer, I'm still on the fence about this game. The gameplay looks nothing like what I want from a Lufia 2 remake.

That said, the music remixes show another remake how it's done.

There is now a separate site for the game's OST: http://www.square-enix.co.jp/music/sem/page/est/

Just leave your cursor still on the site and let the little circle catch up with it open the track list. All but two of the current songs are from Lufia 2's original soundtrack, the other two are from Lufia 1's soundtrack. They are all slightly remixed to sound better.

Track 1: Elcid (Maxim and Tia's home town).
Track 2: Lexis
Track 3: Parcylete (or Parsaraito)
Track 4: This one also says Parcylete, but is Lufia 2's port town theme.
Track 5: Bound Kingdom
Track 6: Crisis?
Track 7: Eserikto (Artea's town, this is Lufia 1's game over theme).
Track 8: Trouble Theme is the best way to describe it.
Track 9: Shrine Theme
Track 10: Lufia 1's Cave Theme

The Bonus Track is a link to the normal Estpolis website, where you can find a web drama of Tia, mainly of her talking to the mayor of Elcid and then to Maxim. A lot of it is the scene in Lufia 2 where she and Maxim are eating the Phantom Fish and talking about how bad it tastes. Most of the dialogue is exactly as it was in Lufia 2, they even decide to put some lemon on it to make it edible.

Also, the main site now has a section about Lexis on it, in the character section.

New stuff was added to the music site:

First 10 songs on the site (The actual music doesn't start until 0:36)

Tracks 11-20 (This has The Turret Forgotten and Battle Theme 1, which are awesome).

Bonus tracks (Arranged versions of some of the above songs).

The first of three web dramas, this is mainly between Tia and Maxim, the Phantom Fish scene.

The second of three web dramas, this is Dekar's entrance in Bound Kingdom.

That is some artwork of the 4 Sinistrals. Up top is Daos, left is Amon, right is Erim, and front is of course Gades.

I'm not sure how I feel about the new looks for them, Erim is kinda sexy, but Amon looks like a zombie. Who cares though, even though they are the same in every game, they always look different.

The scan came from a new article in Famitsu, which, according to some sources, got pulled off shelves because it reported too much stuff from the game... >_>

Apparently the article showed images of the Egg Dragon, and told about a Hard Mode that is unlocked after you beat the game the first time. According to Famitsu, the Hard Mode changes the story a little bit, and gives you more access to the Ancient Cave.

Also, the game comes out in 2 days in japan.

A note on Erim (LUFIA 2 SPOILERS!):
I don't like how the artwork for Erim kinda gives away her identity, while in the SNES game, they made a point to change some things between the two so you couldn't tell who she was. DS Iris art:
Image

In Lufia 2, they gave Iris green hair and Erim blue hair.

Lame!

Easy Modes should not restrict access from portions of a game unless it restricts a bunch of portions of the game. Unless the game is short enough to be played in a single sitting. RPGs tend not to be. You play through them once and tend not to want to play through again for a little while.

Well, there will probably be more stuff only in hard mode, or for all we know, less stuff.

So, the game is out, and one of the well known guys from the Lufia 2 boards on GFAQs got his hands on a copy and has provided a short review of the first hour or so of the game:

Quote:
I can say I like the game so far. Is the camera bad? You can't move it, but it doesn't bother me. The things you can't easily see on it are things you're not supposed to see easily (much like how things were sometimes hidden behind something in Lufia 2).

The game starts off with a short cutscene on a boat... featuring Maxim and... Lexis. Yeah, apparently they're partners, or Maxim's working for him. After that, you get to choose what to do on the world map (I think the options are, from up to down: area, items, equipment, load game, save game). Choose the first area and you get right down to playing, straight into a dungeon. It's nothing like the tutorial dungeon or the first dungeon from the original. You get some short tutorial thingy sometimes and enemies fighting. No puzzles in it though. After that you'll get your first boss. I won't spoil what it is, or what happens afterwards, but you'll dig the music.

The game is pretty fast. You don't spend a lot of time in cutscenes, and I like it. So far there's not much talking... sometimes something is said. No CG so far either (game isn't too big in terms of data size). You'll literally be at that boss within 10 minutes of starting the game up. That's how fast it is.

Then you'll get to the first town. Lexis has his own laboratory there. Town isn't very big, but it's decent sized for the first one. If you're stuck and talked to everyone... try talking to Tia from behind the counter. She'll also sell things after the event. I recommend getting some healing items and anti-poison items (the blue and green potions), since you'll probably need them.

You'll get to the next dungeon afterwards, and that's the first real dungeon. It has a couple of puzzles, but nothing too hard. There's a couple of annoying enemies later in the dungeon that can kill you in no time if you don't watch it. I've had so many close calls already. The game isn't too hard, but it's most certainly not too easy either. The dungeon itself is pretty complex though. Pits and platforms everywhere. Walking around it is just as confusing as the map on the bottom screen makes it seem.

And after that dungeon I quit. Here's the controls:

B: Jump
A: Roll
Y: Attack
X: IP attack
R: Charge
R+Y: Special attack 1 (costs IP)
R+X Special attack 2 (not everyone seems to have it)
L: Switch IP abilities... or something.

You switch characters with the touch screen. Retry option is also on the touch screen, and the same goes for the escape option. Doesn't cost anything.

The story so far seems very different though. But the game itself plays very well. In the normal dungeon encounters you just hear the regular dungeon song, but you'll get one of the Lufia battle songs in the special encounters.

Obviously, he doesn't know much, if any Japanese so information on the actual story and stuff is vague.

Here are some extra comments people have made:
Quote:
Menu options

- Status
- Items
- Equipment
- Misc

--Treasures (five slots - are they key items?

That part confuses me. Just how are battles layed out? Do you fight them Zelda-style, or is it more like Chrono Trigger where you're on the same map and restricted from going places, or do you actually fight enemies in a battle screen like you used to?

The battles are like Zelda I guess. If you have played any of the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles games, think of that, it's basically the same.

Though I don't know how the retry and escape thing relates to battles.

Also I'd like to say that I'm happy that the camera is fixed, cause I guess it kinda means that it will feel like playing an SNES game where you can't turn the camera.

There are some rumors of a European release soon, so that probably means an American release as well.

More stuff:

Quote:
Well, I've played for a while longer now. It seems that most of the smaller quests are gone. In the original, you'd get 2 dungeons. Then you'd get Tia, then a dungeon with her, then you get Guy... and I think you have 1 or 2 dungeons in between before you get Selan. But here I've done 4 dungeons, and have 4 characters. I'm hoping the game will at least be 20 or so hours for the main quest, but it looks like it may be closer to 12-15 hours (which seems rather standard for action-RPG's).

Some new info from the people playing it:

Quote:
I`ve played the first dungeon myself now, and I have to agree that the camera does not seem to be much of a bother so far. I like that it dynamically changes depending on the scene as well.

Music is great and nostalgic. First boss was awesome.

Battles aren`t too hard, but this is the first area after all. And its not supposed to be until the second play through anyways, at least according to interviews.

Quote:
Won't say how long it took me, but I got past the first Gades battle. It was a pretty hard battle that started out easy. But maybe he was supposed to defeat me. I don't know. Guess I'll hear people who die in the battle.

Weird, I figured Gades would be fought early on since the quote before said that the Sinistral Battle music plays at the very beginning.

Quote:
Once the grid system is introduced, you'll find lots of those pieces. I don't know the exact requirements for what you can place where, but the grid-pieces you fiend have some stat ups, and depending on where you place them other stats could go up. Of course, since I don't know Japanese, and since you find so damn many of them, I just place them randomly.

This is referring to the "grid" that each character has that you can place "tiles" you find in chests on to raise their stats, similar to FFXII's License Grid.

Quote:
Oh, and every character as a big grid block, and there's 6 of those blocks. It seems you can share some grid panels as well depending on how you place them.

Also referring to the same thing.

Quote:
The capsule monsters are sad absent. They might have a role in the game, but I doubt it. There are a lot less towns though, and you get characters much sooner/faster. The puzzles... they're different from Lufia 2. Not that they're easy though, but I've yet to encounter one that truly cracks my brain. There were a couple of those in the Lufia 2 main game.

And I died 2 times today. My Maxim is totally overpowered. Neither bosses nor enemies can kill him, but I died because of something else. The solution I used was to just stand in the beam with Maxim since he only gets 1 dmg constantly. He's a much better shield than that block >.<
