It has to "check in" daily to see if you own the games, but it doesn't have to be connected while you play them.

And what happens if your net is down when it wants to "checks in?"

I mean, this whole thing is retarded. You proved you bought the game when you activated it with your required online connection and activation code. Why all this extra security BS?

All of these restrictions will surely destine the console for failure. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how even a sizable chunk of the hardcore gamer front will turn its nose up at this.

I think the PS4 might also implement a similar system of always on and used game restrictions. It's just that this is all doable in firmware and they are each going to need eachother to get away with it. They both want this from a business perspective.

Part of the reason there is no definitive answer is because I don't think MS even has one yet. They can wait to see what Sony does and make sure that they are keeping pace rather than going all in. It's just software. They can change it at any point in the system's life.

For people like us, who are online daily, play together online, have decent connections, etc, it will just be an inconvenience.

Don't forget, they are setting up the marketplace to allow for us to sell back our digital games (and rights to physical discs) as well as trade our digital games. I hope this also means gifting is possible and trades we choose to make exactly in the same manner as Pokemon trades.

Also, as far as the backwards compatibility... we don't NEED it. It's nice when it's there but we can just hang on to our old systems and use those. Besides, the N64 can't play SNES and that wasn't a big deal then. The games work on what they were designed for.

Also, this new generation is likely to last longer than any other to date. There will be a time, my guess is by year three, where the majority of blockbuster games from this generation will be ported digitally. By year seven, most games will be bought from the marketplace and from Gamestop.com as digital downloads, not as physical discs.

BC wasn't a thing back on the 64. Why would we expect/miss it? Now that BC is a thing... yeah, I freaking want it.

I'm mostly getting at, it is a different system. Built with different components. I don't personally care if it is BC or not. If it is there, cool, I can unplug my 360 (which it has been for 5 months...) but if not, I can keep it hooked up as long as the games interest me.

Even if you are okay with having to have two consoles connected to a single setup to play the full library of the past two generations of games, that really doesn't excuse the mountain of other BS they are trying to slip though. Not to mention how freakin' straight up wrong it is to say that only 5% of gamers play older games on BC consoles. I'm sure every single one of us here have taken advantage of it in some form or fashion... and I'm sure that's true for at least half the gamers out there.

All I'm saying is that being okay with this, means that they'll just keep pushing the bill till we have next to nothing.

Also keep in mind, it ONLY has HDMI. No component. Obviously no composite either. It does support 4K resolution media and games though.

Wait, are you seriously saying that even if I wanted one, I don't have a TV that it would work with? If so, then where'd you hear that?

I watched the reveal. They also released the specs and pictures of the system.

Here's a search result for xbox one specs: http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/Xbox_One_Hardware_Specs

Really can't say I'm surprised it's an HD only signal...

It's really about time companies started dropping support for old technology.

I'm also okay with losing BC for anything that uses a different format than what a new system would use. But BC should be available if the format is the same .-.

That being said I'm a very forward thinker when it comes to technology. People holding onto old tech actually annoys me.

I would annoy you greatly... Not too long ago I played through FF Adventure on my still functioning gameboy. Vintage 1989.

I love advances in technology, but I also like when it eases the transition from the previous generation to the next. Not like game consoles are super complicated, but having to dump money on a new system and then have it sit there as you wait for te games you want is a waste of space. Having the opportunity to play last generation's games on a new console would be nice as it would allow me to use all the new features of the system, while having the ability to play my old games while trying to build a steady library for the next generation (or current when it comes out).

Despite Apple's current failings, in the past 5 years I've owned an Apple product, moving from one device to the next was simple and it allows me to use apps from previous iPhones and iOSes. Look at software for Windows. It allows for older OSes to run some of the newer programs. Eventually the older OSes become obsolete, but they still allow the "backwards compatibility.

I guess the point I'm making is, new tech is great, but it would be nice to help the transition (and immediate, possibly long term sales) if they would allow backwards compatibility for at least the previous gen. Nintendo does it, and I'm about to get a Wii U. It'll be nice to play my old games on the new system until I get more current gen games or maybe revisit older games down the road. Just my opinion on the matter. New doesn't need to kick out old, but it shouldn't be the same thing either (eyes Pokemon).

This is a video relevant to discussion, this is about DIVX which probably no one here remembers, but it also had a BS DRM aim:

Hit the 10:00 mark for the best part.
