OMFG! Myself included. FF7 is by far one of the best originals... I remember getting the PS1 Solely because of that game. That and Metal Gear Solid. Then the PS2 for the release of FF-X, and now they are prospectively releasing FF7 again! I'm going to go broke. I'll have to collect soda bottle caps or something to win a contest if I'm going to get one remotely close to opening day. Either that or start investing heavily now....

Yeah, but you have to consider something. Let's say Square enix went through and did, in fact, remake Final Fantasy VII. It is a given that it won't be JUST LIKE the original. That fact alone will make several people think that the remake is just a wanna be of the former version... just for the simple fact that it isn't the same.

For example: What if the battle system is diffrent from the Materia system... How many fans do you think would automatically dis it? As long as we keep an open mind about the remake and accept some possible changes, only then will it be worth making.

They won't change the materia system. At worst, they could make the battles more difficult. My primary concern is the updated graphics the trailer had. FF7's graphics had charm (as low-poly as they were) and several outrageous animations you'd expect from an anime. Heck, one of the summons involves a moogle riding a chocobo crashing into the enemies with a "BOOM" complete with dizzy-eyed effect and seeing stars. I don't see the super-real graphics of the trailer accurately capturing the same charm and wackiness. If anything, they should just add a few more polygons to the models and leave it at that. Keep the characters super-deformed looking, but make the models smoother.

...Anyway, I wound up getting the PS1 for Final Fantasy also, but I got it for Final Fantasy 8, as I already had FF7 on the PC (which is lousy, and I eventually got the PS1 version instead).

True, they might not even touch the materia system. But there is no way it will be the EXACT same just with better graphics. Like as you suggested, I don't think the Chocomog summon materia will be quite as cartoony.

There might be just as much diffrence between the remake and the original as FFX and FFX-2. Or it might only be as diffrent as Final Fantasy (1) and the remake of it for Final Fantasy Origins.

It makes little diffrence to me because I am going to play it without comparing it to the original. As long as they keep the storyline in tact, I doubt that can do any harm.

That'd be a bit difficult. There's the whole Wall Market segment of the game in particular. It flat out will not work so well with serious-looking graphics. So unless the FF7 remake captures the look and feel of the original, with maybe some extras and a better difficulty level, I'm not going to be interested.

I am going to be interested either way... Just because it is Final Fantasy. To this day there are very few FF titles that really blew: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, and the Final Fantasy Legends for gameboy. And that was quite some time ago. Those who said FF8 sucked just compared the junction system too much to the former FF7's materia system. And those who hated FFX-2 missed out because that was one of the best battle systems of all (note: the Dressphere this was a little gay but having a job class system on a active battle system and being able to change jobs at will just rocked).

Oh and yes, if you are talking about the scene when Cloud has to dress up like a girl to impress Don Corneo... I see that looking a bit strange with advanced graphics. But as long as they don't change to story TOO much, it will be okay.

A good example would be like the diffrence to Resident Evil (directors Cut) and Resident Evil Remake (for Game Cube). If it's anything along those lines then, yeah, go for it.

Mystic Quest and FF Legends weren't even real FF games. Mystic Quest was an American made FF for beginner players and wound up being called Final Fantasy USA in Japan. The FFL games are just SaGa 1-3, with sequels such as the Romancing SaGas and Unlimited SaGa.

FF8, I didn't like the junctioning system, but I wasn't comparing it to FF7's materia system. In fact, I barely compare the FF games to each other at all (save for FF9, because of its lousy IMO limit break system and way-too-slow ATB guage). No, I didn't like the junctioning system because using junctioned magic means that whatever stat the magic was junctioned to lowers the stat each time, and I didn't like having to use up turns to draw magic when I'm dealing with monsters that level-up with you and in some cases grow even stronger than you while they do so.

I considered all that a challenge... a good one at that. Even though spells being numeric and not something you can learn was kind of weird, but it wasn't enough to make it a bad game.

And I'm glad to hear about the FFMQ and FFL games not being a main part...

I really would like to see a working demo of this game after they remake it prior to release... I honestly think that with PS2 demo disks that playstation releases with their subscription magazines, if they put it on there, it could mean greatness or total disaster... but if they keep up with their track record, I don't see how it can be bad or worse... I think it will be a plesant surprise. I'm sure they test drive the ff7 remake engine with members of the final fantasy community before release anyways.
