My Chrono Trigger thread was such a success, I thought of possibly trying a new RPG starting early 2014. You guys get to vote on which one you want to see me try. If there is one you had in mind that is not one of the choices, please post it in this thread.

I think you need to list your consoles so we know just how limited we are in suggestions...

Um, yeah, I think you just listed two of the worst RPG choices for someone like yourself.

Final Fantasy 1 is the hardest Final Fantasy, and one of the hardest RPGs. Period. If you're looking to try going through the Final Fantasy series in order, you don't need to. Each Final Fantasy is its own standalone game. They each have their own characters and take place in completely different worlds. The only things the Final Fantasy games share are chocobos, moogles, and a few iconic monsters. If you had to choose a Final Fantasy to start with, I'd actually suggest one of them on the Super Nintendo.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is not a traditional RPG like Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger. It's a strategy RPG. There's no exploration. Instead, almost the entire game takes place through battles. You command a small army on a large battle map, telling individual characters to move to strategic locations to take on enemy characters. And you have a LOT of characters on your team, not just three. Oh, and the biggest reason why you shouldn't try taking on a Fire Emblem game yet: when a character dies, they cannot be brought back to life. So, no. Don't do any Fire Emblems.

Secret of Mana is okay. It's a little difficult, in that you have to keep using your attacks in order to make them stronger (not your traditional level ups), but it can be fun. Especially if you have someone who would be willing to play with you. The game is multiplayer. Out of the three choices you listed, this is the only one I think you'd be able to handle.

Really, though, I think you should do a little more research before choosing your next RPG to play. I mean, you have a whole half a year to decide. Look around for some popular RPGs and watch a bit of the games on Youtube. If I might make a suggestion: purchase yourself a Super Game Boy and find a copy of Pokemon Red, Pokemon Blue, or Pokemon Yellow (three different versions of the same game). In my opinion, anyone seriously looking into RPGs needs to try at least one Pokemon game. But only buy a copy that says that the game has a working save function. Them older games sometimes have dead batteries in them.

In any case, a Super Game Boy is an awesome investment. I'm sure you've seen me let's playing using one by now.

I actually DO have a Super Game Boy. I've been using it for any Game Boy games I have and/or plan to LP. (and by the way, when I was asked what systems I have, I somehow didn't include handheld consoles. My bad)

One reason I made Final Fantasy 1 an option was exactly what you said, if I was gonna try a new series, I'd want to start from the beginning. But if the game is THAT hard, than maybe I will stay away from that for the time being.

One of other members of Super LP Heroes has been trying to get me to play the Fire Emblem series. That's one reason I made that a choice.

I found Secret of Mana on the Virtual Console, and so that's why I threw that in as a possibility.

But despite the choices in the poll, I'm open to other suggestions that I didn't think of.

FF1 is certainly the beginning of a franchise, but not the beginning of any game series. It's hard to call FF a series except in name only - there is literally nothing connecting the worlds or the characters. Just a few staples, as Dray said, but saying they're part of the same series because of this is like saying Secret of Mana is part of a series with Legend of Legaia because they both have bears. Starting at the first FF is a waste of your time.

To be clear, FF is a series because of the team of people and the company making the games. Nothing else. It's best to not think of it as a series of games, but instead, the long term CV of people making them. It showcases the development of the company and the minds of people much more than it represents anything we can consider a continual series.

For once in my life, also, I'm inclined to agree with Draygone on pretty much everything he said.

Except the bit about Pokemon.

I pretty much agree with what Stythe and Draygone have said, Final fantasy 1 is a pretty bad choice.

Of the three listed, I'd suggest Secret of Mana, as the Fire Emblem series, while very good, is also very difficult, and also not the type of game you are probably used to playing.

As a suggestion, I would say play Final Fantasy 2 (I believe it is listed as Final Fantasy 2 on the Virtual Console) for the SNES. I believe Draygone made the suggestion before of playing one of the SNES Final Fantasy games, and that is probably the best place to start.

You really need more systems. There are many more RPGs (and great ones) on the Playstation and Playstation 2. Nintendo's 64 RPG list is pretty short, and the ones on it aren't very good. Quest 64 is pretty bad, then there is Aidyn Chronicles which I haven't heard good things for. Other RPGs? I dunno. Wii allows you access to GameCube games so Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles are some notable ones that I know of. Final fantasy 2 or 3 on SNES are your best bets.

If we're set on SNES games (and apparently leaning toward Squaresoft), I'd probably point you away from FF altogether and suggest Secret of Evermore.

Just a thought.

The stories in the SNES FF games are certainly interesting, albeit a little lacking in translation quality due to their age, the gameplay in them is nothing short of atrocious. Especially after so recently going through Chrono Trigger. I'd say that SoE is a fair step up in gameplay from CT.

Honestly, as far as FF is concerned, it would probably be best for newer players to start off with a later FF and work backwards. It would be smartest to, say, grab VI and work back towards I.

And we got to remember that we are working with extremely limited hardware. As far as GoldGlee is concerned we have access to three consoles and the VC. That cuts out a good 90% of all possible RPGs. It's for this that I'd highly recommend grabbing the big E for the games that aren't readily available (Secret of Evermore being one of them). ZSNES and EPSXE alone give you access to majority of all the "must play" RPGs.

So, seriously, mind posting all the consoles and handhelds you own?

Okay, so judging by what all the posts I've read in this thread. You guys definitely gave me something to think about for the next 6 months. Many of the games you guys have suggested, I will be adding to the poll. If what you suggested is on a system I already have, I could probably find a physical copy of said game.

@Lantis, you mentioned something about the "Big E". I am assuming you are talking about emulators. Well, I am slowly but surely getting into using emulators.

Though fair warning: For those that have suggested Playstation games, I was told that those game emulations are very big in size, and the SD Card I'm using for downloading emulators is 4 GB.

And the confusion starts...

Which FF2/3? I'd like to assume 4/6.

>_>

I'll be honest, I'm confused, but I assume it's the SNES ones that people have suggested in this topic.
