Many reviewers in gaming magazines give games lower scores because they don't innovate.

Should innovation be a requirement or should some games just be another version of the games we all know and love.

While minor improvements are always welcome, I simply want some games to be more of the same old thing with new events, environments, characters, and storyline.

Some games immerse me and let me feel like a badass because I can jump right into them as a pro, instead of taking time to learn the new controls, on screen indicators, etc.

What do you think?

I agree with you on how it is nice to jump in and not have to play with controls (I am always trying to get my FPS's to match Halo controls).
Dragon Quest is a great example of if it aint broke don't fix it. Although if another game popped up emulating a unique series, I would talk it down and rant with my friends about it just ripping off someone else's great ideas. I look for games that are innovative to keep me interested. I know there's no way I could play FF7 for the next 3 years and still call it fun. So I move on to something different.
Innovation doesn't have to mean reinventing the wheel, it can be as simple as just tweaking it up a bit, like adding a few notches. Maybe eventually linking two notched wheels together. They no longer have the same function as a traditional wheel but they are wheels non the less.
Thats where games like Star Ocean, Disgaea, Valkyrie Profile, and a whole lot of other games really come out on their own. They all have similar heritage and all involve character building. It is the smaller details such as how you build the characters, how you advance through the story, and how you interact with their worlds that truly set them apart.
Venturing outside of the role playing realm, innovation in gameplay is what gives you your Katamaris, your Elibits, your Dooms, and even your pokemons.
With out such diversity, I know I personally would have given up games a long time ago.

Going back to what you said earlier about sometimes wanting more of the same thing, sure on occasion that can be the perfect answer. I for one would love to see a pure sequel to Star Ocean 2 or Arc the Lad 2. But to have innovation as an afterthought in gameplay is a bit much for me.

Hmm... drop the wife, get a girl but lead on the misses for a while :D

I agree with you, minus the whole Dragon Quest thing. I never liked the storyline, cause there hardly is any. It seems to be just running errunds the whole time with a scene that might have something to do with the game ever so often. But we've flogged that horse to death all ready.

*glances at Valk and Dray*

^_^

Anyway, Bo. You are right. And I think it's prone to ADD ridden spaz gammers who are more impatient and demand newer shinier things in games over anything else. Or something along those lines.

Are you therefore against it, or do you think it can be good for the gamer?

Against- It can be good for the individual gamer situation by situation, but it overall saturates the market with more of the same game with a different name.
Rhyming is fun.

I'm all for having similar gameplay, as long as a company doesn't do it just to be either a copycat or to "play it safe".

As far as i'm concerned, the only thing that they should innovate is the graphics. If you look at all the great PSX games, Tomb Raider, MML, Spyro the controlls almost always stayed the same for the sequils. Why? BECAUSE IT WASN'T BROKEN.

Infact, I dont mind inovation as long as it doesnt interfere with gameplay experiance, or continuty.

Infact, as long as continuity is honored, I can forgive other things. For instance, FFX-2 has a COMPLETELY different Gameplay dynamic than FFX. I accept it beacuse Square honored the storyline of FFX. They simply added to what was already there, and didn't try to change or over look extablished plot points in the previous game. (an example if this can even be found in MML, in the transition from MML1 to MML2, some how Mega Man's sirname changed from Volnutt to Casket. The hell? 0_o? )

If a copycat game is no good, then we DO suffer, but if it is good then it can expand on the competition's original game to give us other examples, maybe a whole new genre.

A new genre through a copycat game seems, to me at least, impossible by definition of copycat...
But if it truly is a good game and goes beyond the initial game, I will take a look at it. And if its an rpg, I will most likely own it. Im at 47 on the PS2 alone. I will end up posting it in DE's list your games thread later on..
Back on topic, ... I guess I'm done with this topic. The rest of you have fun though.

In order to generate a genre, an innovative game has to be made and then others need to immitate it. Having a genre within a single series is rare (although RPG Makers are examples of the console 'gamemaking' genre). Other wise you need to have competeing companies make similar games based on the new innovation.
