Like.

Yeah.

Is there actually any good RPGs out for PS2 right now? I've been out of the loop for so long and am thinking about getting back into console RPGs. .. rpoblem is they all seem to suck lately.

You are right about the sucky part. (For the most part) I would say not to go for PS2 RPGs and try to get older consoles and older RPGs.

Have you played the Shadow Hearts series? Those are pretty nice.

Grandia Xtreme is fun to play, too.

And Final Fantasy X was a good one.

Oh I know Mega Man X Command Mission. Actually I'm kind of joking, it's not really that great, and only worth getting if you like Mega Man X, as an RPG it's pretty generic, and easy, and short. Front Mission 4 is worth a look if you like Tactical type RPGs, though don't expect an FFT as it's more akin to a turn based strategy game, with RPG elements. Xenosaga was ok, though I'm not sure about the later additions in that series. But yeah other than FFX I haven't played a really great RPG on the PS2 yet, I've played good ones but nothing really great. If you want something to pass the time you could get .hack. The story is fairly interesting, but getting through the gameplay to see the story is tedious. Thanks to a demo CD wiping both my memory cards had to play through that series twice, since it wiped it as I was on the last disc (it's a 4 disc series). Had to do that with Dark Cloud as well, though dark cloud had a less compelling story but slighly better gameplay.

If you liked the PsX Suikodens, you might like Suikoden 5
But I'm biased towards Suikoden, being my favorite RPG series. :D

I agree. That's my favorite RPG too. :D
But since Reki is asking for Ps2 games, I suggested S5, which is my second favorite Suikoden. It sort of has that Suikoden 2 feeling. Must be because the artist that drew the characters of 2 also drew the ones of 5.
And Josephine rules!

My favorite is probably the first kingdom hearts.
I was never too fond of turned based battles because they are fairly boring.

I was thinking about playing Disgaea, as I've heard good things but never got around ot playing it.. I think I'll do that.

Loved Grandia 1 and 2.. never played "Xtreme".. hated 3. I actually haven't finished 3 because I hated it so much - the same regurgitated battle system was the only redeeming thing about that game. The story blew, the gameplay blew, and the characters were kind of lame. </3 squareenix.

played the first suikoden.. loved it. is it a series where I'd have to play the other ones before 5, or is it viable to skip straight to 5 and not miss anything?

Played pretty much everything else on Lantis' list.. not a lot special though. I'm not a fan of Xenosaga, however, unlike seemingly the rest of the world. Awesome battle system (why do newage games focus so much on the battle system..) but it seems almost like a desperate attempt to put some focus on story by putting in countless hours of cinematics that are entirely too long.
my thoughts on xenosaga have always been: "If I wanted to watch a movie, I'd buy a movie. I buy games to play games."

So, that's a few i could play. how about some actual new material ^^ <3

I think the newest RPG for PS2 right now is Valkyrie Profile 2...

But seeing that the next gens are about to take over, the've pretty much stopped making anything new.

I think there are only 3 more games coming out for PS2: God of War 2, Final Fantasy XII, and the new Mortal Kombat title.

So I guess it's a waiting game, really...

Well. when it ocmes to Suikoden games'timeline, it goes like this
S4->S1->S5->S2->S3
So, if you remember S1 and play S5, I don't think it would matter, altough you'll probably miss some minor "Oh, look, that one appeared in S2!" moments.
Suikoden 2 is still a great game that I think you should play if you loved S2. It's superior in every way. :)

How about the SaGa series? Unlimited Saga is a very different game, and Romancing Saga looks more like a FF9 hybrid. I do warn, however, that Unlimited is very complex, it's not easy to learn.

I was also looking at getting Jade Cocoon 2, looked really interesting.

I couldn't really get into Unlimited Saga. Too many bad elements. The way you walk through dungeons... and the whole "Price is Right" wheel in everything you do just got on my very last nerve.

Meh, to each there own.

I haven't played enough of Unlimited, but I heavily enjoyed other SaGa games, such as Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2, so I gave it a shot. Haven't played it much actually...

Do you think that this is a problem? It's kinda nice seeing developers try new workings in the typical RPG battle system, because most of them suck with the traditional. Besides, over half of the gameplay in RPGs is battling, so they might as well attempt to make it interesting.

Final Fantasy 12 comes out sometime in October. It's supposed to be different than most of the other Final Fantasies. Whether that's a good thing or not remains to be seen, but I myself am looking forward to it (and hope to get the "Collector's Edition" if they don't stop selling them too soon).
