Look, since the re-release of all the original FF titles on the multitude of other platforms, the changed the names back to the original numbering... that's what we should use to prevent this kind of stuff in the future.

Given that he doesn't have PS, it's really fairly simple. If he ever gets an emulator, yeah, then it'll get confusing: but there was no such confusion prior to that. Speak of it in terms of SNES and earlier's generation.

Not really. If everyone would just call the game what it freaking is and not what it was changed to, this never would be a problem to begin with. Specially considering that after the SNES era, they DID change it back to the original numbering system.

It's not complicated unless you make it as such. Besides, even with the proper names, you can't confuse Final Fantasy 3 or 6 with any other game since there's only one.

Yes, but if he doesn't have access to the post-SNES stuff then the distinction between old and new numbering systems is completely irrelevant. What he can get is only of one type; the confusion is when you can get games from either one of the two types.

This was one of those times where it really would have been simpler to just leave our knowledge at the door unless he decided to go down emulator road.

If we call it based on the number he can see on the cartridge, and strictly that, the possibility of confusion is literally 0. But now that the cat is out of the bag, well, all bets are off and we will have to ensure he's getting the correct one and translating correctly between the two numbering systems while we talk and he picks out his copy.
