Beware of Spoilers.
So...I haven't beat the game yet. However, I have noticed something that's been seriously grinding my gears. The fetch quests....are....EVERYWHERE. Keep in mind I am talking about the story quests. Essential, as in, you can't skip them. Yes, every zelda game has fetch quests, I do not disagree, but the fetch/story ratio for Squidward Sword is...just...horrible. So, I need to find Zelda in another world. Kay. I need to give my sword a energy drink. Kay. I need to find three flames of awesome to give energy to sword. Kay.
At first, you have no idea where the flames are, to find out where the flame is, you must solve a puzzle. To solve the puzzle, you have to find a windmill piece. To find the windmill piece, you must fix up a robot. To fix up the robot, you need a flower(You sometimes pick one up along the way anyway). Now you can find the windmill piece, once found, you can then solve the puzzle. When you solve the puzzle you can go and find out where the first flame is.
Now we go get the first flame... To get the item you need so you can get the flame, you need to pass a test. Go pass the test. Done. Now you need to find the holder of the flame. So you need to find someone who knows where the holder of the flame is. Found the person who knows. Now go find the holder of the flame. Found. Wait, the holder of the flame needs water. Water from...get this...the first dungeon you go into. The end room of it. The dungeon is now set with a new key you need to fetch(Granted, this doesn't take very long). Get the water. Go give it to the Flame Holder. Now you need to go into a dungeon to actually get the flame.
Mind you, all of this with nearly no storyline. And this is only 1 out of 3 flames so far. The whole game is kinda like this. "Oh, need to get inside a dungeon? Wait, do this first!, oh wait, do this before that!" Keep in mind, I wouldn't mind it 'as much' if the game produced some storyline with it to keep the want to go forward going. However, thoughout the first part of the game, you are trying to find zelda.
When you're looking for zelda, most if not all the dungeons are pretty much "Sorry link, your princess is in another dungeon!" You do ALL of this fetching to get inside the bloody dungeon, just to find out not much storyline is exposed when you're done with the dungeon, just to do it all over again.
I know other installments of the Zelda series does fetch quests. I don't mind very many fetch quests. But Skyward Sword gives you SO MANY OF THEM, with nearly NO story to reward you at the end of it. In, say, Ocarina of Time, to get into a dungeon you typically need one item. Getting the item is a small fetchquest in itself. Then after, you get some story and progression.
So far, I think the game had a good idea, all the non-optional quests are just killing it for me. Otherwise, I'd say it is a funish game.
7ish hours put into it so far, not too pleased. </3
