Saw it on Destructoid:

http://www.destructoid.com/publishers-a ... 5292.phtml

Quote:
If a known developer is using Kickstarter to fund its next game, be careful -- the money might end up getting used to ostensibly give a major publisher a new game for free. Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has revealed that publishers tried to use his company for that very purpose.

"We were actually contacted by some publishers over the last few months that wanted to use us to do a Kickstarter," he revealed on his team's own KS page. "I said to them 'So, you want us to do a Kickstarter for, using our name, we then get the Kickstarter money to make the game, you then publish the game, but we then don't get to keep the brand we make and we only get a portion of the profits.'

"They said, 'Yes'."

It's a shame Obsidian can't name names, though one can easily understand why. In any case, this is really low, even for videogame publishers, and I certainly can't wait until one of them is finally caught trying to ostensibly steal IP for free. The sad thing is ... it's just so obvious that it happened. Just once, I'd like to think publishers wouldn't do the sh*tty thing I fully expect them to do. Just once. Maybe for Christmas.

Can't even say I'm mad at this. It is predictable, pathetic, and just disappointing.

That's really effed up. If anyone starts a KS, they need to watch out for this BS.

Lowest of the low. I guess that's publishers like EA/Activision etc these days.

And, that Obsidian Kickstarter was huge! At first, I thought their Kickstarter had turned out to be the publisher getting their dime, glad that wasn't the case.

What really really angers me, is that EVERY publisher anymore is like "Such and such niche game won't sell. We won't risk it" even when they KNOW there's an audience, but they won't make fat stacks like they would with appealing the lowest common denominator demographics. So, Kickstarter comes in, love of indies, love of certain game companies that can't get a project green-lit, and so the publishers see this as "Well, if we don't have to shoulder the risk, let the consumer pay, and we reap all the profits." I can see them continuing to do something like that, and I'll definitely be aware of what I back to prevent that. I saw in the article that EA, of course, will be the first in line to exploit KS publicly. Bah!

This HAD to be EA.

And this is just disgusting. Have the users pay the money via kickstarter, and then rake in the money from the sells from those very same people. And Obsidian gets bugger all. The fans are robbed, the actual developers get screwed, and the company gets free money.

This should be illegal and they should find out who exactly was trying to do this.
