You know what the problem is with survival-horror these days? IT AIN'T SCARY ANYMORE!!!

Yes there are monsters, there is the undead, there is survival. But it is all about action now. You don't have enough time to wander slowly through a dark environment and get scared. As far as I'm concerned and I really mean this. Resident Evil went down hill with RE4. At least that game had some pace to it but I didn't really like it. I can't stand what I see here. It is far, far too over the top for me to believe I am playing 'in a world' anymore. I'll always remember it is a game. Goodbye immersion.

I think you missed the part where Resident Evil isn't TRYING to be scary anymore. If they were claiming this to be a scary game, I'd call them out on it too. But yeah, since Code Veronica, RE's formula changed. It sacrificed horror for action. And you know what? I like both of them. Actually, I love both of them. I've dumped several hours into the classic horror style RE titles, and probably just as much into the modern action style RE titles. And since co-op has been introduced in RE5, it's only gotten more fun. Ix and I played RE5 several times over. And that's why I'm looking forward to this game. It looks amazing. I don't see how you can look at that and not want to play it. If you can come to terms that the genre has changed and don't expect it to be a horror title, you'll find yourself having a lot of fun with it. Promise.

I'd rather play L4D, L4D2, or any Halo if I'm going to play co-op. But do you really think they aren't 'claiming' this to be scary? I mean I know their focus is co-op action/adventure but I bet you they still try to sell it as survival-HORROR. Maybe I'm wrong, but if this is horror then so is any number of titles that have horrific monsters.

Honestly though what really makes me not want to play it and the reason that I can't get on board with this (even if I could get over the loss of the old school survival-horror game) is the stupid mechanics. It is that whole run at angle, slant up, realign, look up, hope the enemy isn't next to you or else you have to hit the sidestep button instead of simply moving to the side with the controller like any normal game. I've played through the entirety of RE4 but only the demo levels for RE5 (so I only have a limited amount of experience there) and the ONLY thing I liked about the action was the kickback of the rifle in RE4. All the rest was annoying and EXTREMELY tedious. Honestly I saw none of the smoothness or diversity of challenge in these games as I saw in the L4D or Halo titles. It felt very formulaic ACTION-wise.

Different strokes for different folks I guess but I'll tell you what. Give me L4D2 gameplay with RE world and story and I'm in. But I can't deal with it the way it is now. Hopefully they've improved the gameplay mechanics but it doesn't look like it from the video.

Bo, your last thoughts there on RE&L4D are exactly how I feel. I'm right there with you. Give me that or the old school PS1 gameplay. Even with tank controls.

I'll check out the demo and give Lantis's recommendation a go. Who knows. Maybe I have just been too stubborn.

For what it's worth, I didn't like the change at first. I felt a bit betrayed. But after I played through RE4, I just fell in love with the series all over again... just in a new way.
