It seems that there are either hard core Final Fantasy fans, or those who just hate it entirely (which is fine, because I hate other popular series like Halo and such). What gets me, though, are people who have played Final Fantasy 7 and pretty much anything afterwards

To me, the BEST Final Fantasy title out there is the SNES' Final Fantasy 6. And all too often, all the Final Fantasy "fans" haven't played a single title BEFORE 7. This kind of bothers me.

And for this, I would like to coin a term. 7up fans. People claiming to be true Final Fantasy fans that have only played from Final Fantasy 7 and up. Kind of hard to be a fan when you are cutting out damn near half of what makes up the entire franchise.

Anyway, that's just my two cents.

I guess I could be considered a 7up fan. I've played all of them except for 3 and 11. FF7 was the first FF I played though. To me, it's still my fav. I liked most of them, but to me I think it was going backwards that gave me the view of the series I have.

FF7 is a much more serious game as far as atmosphere and text goes. Stepping back a generation and the text is much more comedic. I think if I would have played the games in order my opinion might be different. So yeah, I think the order in which you play the FF game can make an impact on how a person feels about the games.

FF7 was the first Final Fantasy I played and only my second RPG I played. When reading a lot of Final Fantasy arguments age comes into play. I’ve been given the “wait until you grow up. Your opinions going to change” thing before. It hasn’t so far. I agree FF7 hasn’t aged the best, but the magic is still there. It’s one of those games I grew up playing during my childhood. For that it’s always going to have a special place in my heart.

Here and at the pav the “older members” seem to have a lot of love for earlier console games. I think it’s just a nostalgia thing. Those are the games you grew up with and remember when thinking back on childhood. So naturally you should have a lot of love for those games. I think with the FF7 thing it’s a generation split. That’s where a lot of the arguments come from. Final Fantasy is a long running series. The different generations grew up playing different ones, so people’s opinions might be different. That’s the magic of video games.

Of course this isn’t always the case, but it’s how I see it. It doesn’t really bother me if they’ve only played from 7up and consider themselves true FF fans. Some people don’t have the resources to play the early games. It DOES however bother me when people think one is so much superior to the others without playing them all. That’s just stupid.

You need to play Final Fantasy 6 (FF3 on the SNES). It is just as moody and serious as FF7. In fact, if you manage to get the "bad ending" to one little fetch quest (and you probably will),
one of the main characters actually tries to create suicide.
Didn't see Cloud get that emo.

That, and FF7's Popeye character models don't really help much to its atmosphere. :P

Personally? Didn't enjoy the FF games before 7. Love 7-10 however. So yeah, maybe I'm a 7up guy, since I haven't beat any older FF games, but have played most.

I started with FFIV, or 2 back in the day on the SNES, and moved on from there. My favorite game in the series is FF8 though, and it was like the 4th one I played or so. FF6 is also awesome though, really good game.
