...but you could put a refresh rate on the main forum page, so that people who don't have e-mail replies turned on can just kind of hover on the main page of which will update its self.

Code:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="30">

content = (number of seconds)

and if it wasn't obvious, it goes within the meta tags.

Just a minor tweak to consider...

I just hit the Forum Index link at the top of the index or use the refresh button myself.

Yeah... F5 FTW and all...

But I dunno... say you are running around the house. You can just kind of waltz by and check without having to press anything. Perfect for lazy ppl.

Unless lazy people don't run around the house...

wouldn't that, like, slow down browsing considerably? Not just the main page, but everything... it's kind of a pain to have some auto-refresh in a back window slow down whatever you're doing.

Not if your computer runs on broadband.

Even for 56k demon users... I really doubt you'd notice.

And if you are actively browsing, it wouldn't refresh anyway because you are constantly changes pages... which resets the time it refreshes.

Anyway, I only ment for the main page of the forum. Not the sub forums or threads. And I use email notification, so I wouldn't rely on it anyway. So either way, I don't really care.

Well Lantis, that kind of thing is typically not persued in the interest of lowering the bandwidth and sever load. If you have everyone auto refreshing the page then that can increase both server bandwidth and load, and since these pages aren't optimized for refreshing it would require the whole page be redone, and all the SQL queries done again.

So while it's nice what if someone forgot and left it open all day. Oh and Opera has this feature in the browser, much to the chagrin of Web Admins I'm sure.

Of course my chat program will use something similar (setInterval/setTimeout FTW) but of course a chat program using just HTTP has to constantly 'refresh'. Of course most of the time the chat program will be sending out 0 bytes, as opposed to the whole index page of the mag. I guess broswer caching might alleviate a bit of this, but I kind of doubt it, and it still would take up server load time to parse the page only to figure out it hasn't changed.

So while a good idea, there are many other ways to do this that use less bandwidth, mailing or being notified of a topic change is one of them. Plus refreshing the page is easy enough to do. Maybe one day when HTTP becomes socket based, and can support multicast as the default, but until then. Still would waste a bit of bandwidth though.

If you leave the room, oh well. Not like the new topics are gonna disappear while you're gone.

I like to sleep with my computer logged onto the mag.

Makes me feel like all of you guys are in the room with me. XD

So what you mean is, to have the index page auto refresh it self so you can always see the new changes?
