IE (commenly known as Internet Explorer) is Microsoft's browser that comes with Windos OS's and they do have an available Mac version. It's totally not web compliant as Microsoft thinks its better than anyone else EVER. But it is the "main browser" you could say because it's what most people use. Thus most webpages are made to look good in it and suck in other browsers like Opera, Safari, or Firefox.
A large amount of people go around promoting Firefox, because they think it is all that great, but really it isn't. Firefox is not completely web compliant either though it isn't as bad as IE. Personally I think it's terrible and won't use it. Netscape is even worse, nobody should ever use it. It has a freaking splash screen for when it's loading, can you say bulky?
Opera is definitly a great browser. It's completely web compliant. I don't use it currently, because I'm too damned lazy to download it. But if I was to use something else that would be it. The only think I don't really like about it is that it has tabbed browsing. Which is one thing that I really like about IE, it's lightweight, and not tabbed. Though the newest version has that feature >___> bleh.

Iunno never used safari... its based on firefox though... kind of sketchy.

I use Safari all the time. It's much faster than IE (at least my version of IE, 5.0 I believe). I also prefer Safari over Opera, because, well, it's also too slow. Or maybe I'm just used to Safari =P

Never used Netscape or Firefox, though Firefox made a big name for itself.

Safari it's pretty good. You should try it

Firefox is the best in my opinion I use grease monkey for some userscripts. I don't see many ads on anymore websites

Regarding this whole post, I am learning all about web compliance in my classes... I hate it, I've got to review all my code, and get used to XHTML now. Web compliance is a huge issue that my teacher is going over and Web Accessibility (Section 508) is another big thing he hounds over. Soo much work I barely get a chance to get on here anymore.

trig is boring in like grade 9 and stuff.. but in math 12 .. or 30.. or whatever type of school system you are on. trig is the best unit ^.^
