Hey all!

Got the bug to play some RPGM1 games recently, and I wanted to LP one in particular. Problem was, not every game is formatted to work with ePSXe. You cannot change memory cards in real-time with ePSXe, and it's a problem for games with 3 memory cards needed to boot up. And of course, people made games with the Dex Drive and actual cards in mind, so a lot of the older titles have large scenario data, system, and sprite cards needed for startup.

This was a problem I hit. Thanks to Remeer for suggesting I try I different option.

First off, you're going to need the "pSX" emulator. I am using version 1.13, but I'm sure most versions will work. Find that. You will need a Playstation bios file to get it working, too. Obviously, you will also need a RPG Maker 1 copy to play in said emulator. I'm not providing any of this.

Two: You need to get a memory card converter, to actually convert your .GME Dex Drive files.

http://www.aldostools.org/memcards.html

Download "Memory Converter- ALL IN ONE!"

This program is nice, but old. You need an old Microsoft Visual Basic version to run it. It should not interfere if you have a newer one installed. Without it, you will get a missing DLL error running the converter. Here is where I got what I needed:

http://soft.softoogle.com/ap/msvbvm50-dll-get-113.shtml

Open the converter, and load up the .GME you want to convert. Simply hit convert, and when prompted to choose a file type to convert to- choose "Other - AdriPSX, FPSE, pcsx (*.mcr) and hit Save. You will now have your .GME file and a .mcr file in that same directory.

Now, open up pSX. Be sure to load up your .iso or bin, and hit reset so that RPG Maker loads.

Here's the most tricky and non-tricky part. Simply do the following:

Click File-> Configuration -> Memory Cards

Load up your .mcrs you just converted. You always need your SYS and SCE cards first. If the game calls for more cards(i.e., a sprite card), fret not.

Personally, I went ahead and removed the card entirely by hitting "Eject", went back to the emulator window, and then changed the memory cards for posterity.

Now, Repeat the process: Click File-> Configuration -> Memory Cards

Remove the SYS card and put the Sprite card in its place.

Make the emulator window active again, and it should load the required card upon command. No more limitations with what RPGM1 games can be played on a computer.

---

NOTE: THIS WILL ALSO WORK WITH RPGM4. Simply change your Playstation bios to a Japanese one in the pSX settings and re-start the emulator to get RPGM4 to work.

File -> Configuration -> BIOS

And change the first option. While the US version of the bios is 1001, the JP one is 7000.

---

Also, this is obvious- but if you do decide to make an RPGM4 game in this manner... just start new memory cards, and then convert those files to .gme using the very same converter to distribute for Dex Drives. If you want to make them for pSX, use the default that the emulator gives you as is. Simple, no?

---
Last note: This was all done on a Windows 7, 64-bit system.

Hope this helps someone, and PM if you need any help.

im gona sticky this bad boy for awhile. my game in particular is guilty of needing many cards to operate. sometimes i need up to 4 cards at once depending on what sprites are needed at the time of loading up. im going to spend some time and reply more rpg maker games to get back into the scene. great solution!

edit: btw, what rpg maker 1 game have you decided to try? do a review too if you can, always great to give others feedback!

Thanks!

I'm doing a favorite I believe I did a preview of on the site before(my memory escapes me). Dark Illusions by Vonwert.:) I pmed him about it on the Pav, and he said no probalo, but there's some graphic text(forgot about that whole bit, heh), and yeah. Should be fine. Definitely one of my RPGM1 favorites. In my top two solidly. I love most stuff he puts out, though.

So I was superbly bummed about the ePSXe limit because of that. I'm so thankful this one works! Much easier for LPing, and accessing without shuffling a ton of Dexdrive saves for me. I have 3 PSone cards, two Dex Drives, and two copies of RPG Maker. However, when I was previewing way back, it was sometimes inconvenient despite having that many cards since I had saves for other games on them. I wish I had bought more memory cards back in the day, honestly.

It's funny that there's an emulator that you can force to re-check memory card slots while in game, but the PS3 won't. So lame.

I just wanted to bump this to say thanks!

I was using epsxe and getting frustrated with a game that uses multiple cards (5) and I couldn't get the emulator to recognize my disc drive after the first boot. Fixed the disc drive issue after 30 minutes or so. Can't fix the memory card issue.

Then I remembered reading some great advice. Somewhere. Took a short while but I remembered it was bookmarked here!! So thanks again!

Awesome! Glad you got it to work.:D I love ePSXe for a lot, but with this I just made a separate folder for RPGM since I don't have my Dexdrive, PSone, memory cards, etc, unpacked yet. I also only have 3 PS1 memory cards... but, once I get the Dexdrive working again that shouldn't be an issue.
