While reading an article on IGN about the Top 10 things destroying videogames, I came across this one that struck my interest.

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/944/944828p2.html

The promise of a game series that never came out...Has anyone commited these sins while working on the rpgmmaker community?

I'll step up and announce I'm guilty of this. I had this plan to release the entire Ultimate Story saga on rpgmaker. I thought it was going to be great, and really wanted to release the whole thing to start my rpgmaking career with a bang.

So what happened? The story itself wasn't all that great, and working on it alone (instead of having my two friends help), was a big factor in me losing motivation for the project. I decided to patch up whatever I had done and get it out there to generate enough interest for the next game, so I'd have enough motivation to continue. Unfortunately, Usuru wasn't popular enough to generate any excitement. Nobody talked about it, or even really played it. Hence, I've scrapped all plans on working in the Ultimate Story universe.

I would consider continuing the Ultimate Story if my friends promised to pitch in. But they aren't interesting in rpgmaker, so the chances of such a revival is very unlikely.

It almost made me quit rpgmaker for good. Thankfully I've got a new idea under my belt and have moved on, but it was a pitfall that almost consumed me.

yea this is a big problem for us and of course developers too it seems. many of those problems are more big time professional games though there are some lessons to be learned for us. its a good read for us gamers anyway because we already know these trends and just may need a helpful reminder of the crap companies are shoveling at us.

keep in mind that this article starts on page two, you will need to select the first page if you want to read all ten game destroying trends.

Yeah, I promised a trilogy based on "Raiders" when I didn't really have anything as good as the first game. I figured it would all fall into place like the first one did. Took it on faith that it would all work out. It suffers from "the sequel ain't as good as the original" syndrome. The reason why I typed up that walkthrough of the aborted sequel's story in PNG was to assure my fans (all one of 'em) that they're not missing out on anything great.

Well, I intended to make an RM3 game before the one I'm making, but I don't have a maxdrive, so I never had any intention of releasing it

You know, part of the problem with planning, let alone promising a trilogy in this community is two fold. Not only do so many of you work based on motivation by others that unless everyone loves your game, you may not be motivated to make a second or third, but even if they do love your first game, you may be sick of it.

I had ideas for stories and characters and dramatic situations that once meant a lot to me that I could care less about now, so the last thing I want to do is be locked into having to make a sequel about them.

On the other hand a professional company has money to motivate game makers and the writer, not having to do the actual programming, can write the whole thing from the start or later so long as he/she is making bank.

Slayers' Reign was originally going to be part of a 5-part series. Don't ask me what I was planning for the last parts. I don't have any idea. Which is probably why I then started to plan it as a 3-part series, instead. But eventually I came to my senses, realized how long and how much effort it would take to make 3 games off one story, and changed the story of SR to give it closure. I still have the plans for the second two games, but the changes to the plot of SR ensure no way to connect to those two games, so it's not likely they'll get used, least not for SR. Nor do I have any intention to give SR a sequel. I got other games to make, you know.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure I ever really announced that it'd be in a series. At most, it might've been a casual mentioning when someone questioned why it (originally) was a subtitle.
