I'll be changing and reworking the sprite so what you see is not final.

This is a great excuse to use since I saved it in jpeg without realizing the consequences.

id suggest taking a sprite mask from one of the existing character maps and editing that rather then starting from scratch. building on top of that allows you to get the proportions correct, especially if this is your first time building a sprite.

think regular walking, move one leg then the other, swing the arms opposite. when animated it will go left, middle, right, middle and so on. at rest is always the middle panel and the animation will always alternate from middle to one side.

take the middle image and copy it to the other panels then edit each panel till it looks like walking or whatever animation your going for.

face never changes. look carefully at the other premade animations. the only changes are the arms, the legs and sometimes the height during the move phase of the animation.

if you want to add flair, then you can have a piece of hair move back and forth on the head but thats more for final touches and only if it adds to the character. build the middle model first, then add the two flanking basic animations, then add to it. think of it as layers.

I've arrived at yet another problem. Flipping the hair so I can create the final row. How would you flip a selected part of the image in photoshop?

I guess the easiest way would be to select the marquee tool (should be the one on the top left that looks like a dotted-line box) and select what you want flipped, then right click it and select "free transform."

From there you can manipulated as you see fit, or you can right click again to automatically flip, rotate, ect.
