Those who have played my Slayers' Reign demo and enjoyed it. Did you like it because of the story, gameplay, and the game in general, or did you just like it because it was an impressive feat on a limited tool like RPGM1?

I'm at yet another dilemma, here. I was thinking about how I've been wanting to make the game on RPGM1 because an epic game like that would be an impressive feat, and I realized, maybe that's the bigger reason why people are liking it. Take away the fact that RPGM1 is a limited tool, for a moment. Is Slayers' Reign good on its own merits? If I used a tool that instead had virtually limitless power, and for the most part put Slayers' Reign on it as-is, would you like it as much?

I'm not trying to imply anything. I just want people to like Slayers' Reign more as a game than an impressive feat. If people only like it because you don't normally see dark rainy cutscenes on RPG Maker 1, then I have some serious reconsidering to do.

I posted this response at the Pavilion, but here is a copy & Paste anyhow. Just for those who don't get over there:

Dang It!

One of these days I'll get a dex drive...

I've just been broke and avoiding ebay (and other online shopping sites)!

But I can say that if YOU enjoy making it on whatever system - Then that is the way to go!

I just think that if you try to tailor a game to the audience, it will fail.

Make it for yourself, from the heart!

The rest will follow.

Or not.

But either way, you will know that you made a game Your Way, and that is the whole point of any RPGMaker!

I think.

Maybe.

That said, you would reach a wider audience on another maker that does not require a dex drive to share the game!

I'm with Rodak.

Doing impressive things for the sake of it being impressive isn't a good
reason to be doing it. Especially if your goal is to impress an audience.
There are so many unique individuals out there. Everyone has a different
taste in gaming, with different likes, dislikes, personal hangups, things that
tend to bug them, and things that they find impressive. That's something
I've learned since I joined these communities. Time and again, I've
observed that my personal hangups aren't shared by others. Something
that bugs me may not bother someone else. Same goes for things that I
find impressive. Others may not even notice impressive things that I put
into my game. Something that blows away one person may not even faze
another.

There are so many things in "Raiders Of Lekunder" that no one's ever
commented on. Attention to detail, story scenes fade in and out. Little
things like that. Lots of details that add to the overall quality. I was
impressed while I was working on it. I did it because I'll know the
difference.

Everything I do, I do for me, because I like to see cool stuff and for no
other reason.

TBH, the fact that is was on RM1 was a bit of the reason I played it. Not to say that was a bad thing. I just really like RM1...

But trust me, you've got something good... and I know that SR has been put on the back burner alot and has been tossed around on wether or not is will be completed, but I'd be a bit saddened to see it not completed... even if it was imported to another maker.

All in all though, if that's what YOU want to do (wether it be re-make it on another RM or quit the project all together)... then that's what you should do.

Whoa, no no, I'll never scrap Slayers' Reign. It is my big project and nothing can replace it.

I'm definately making the game for myself, but part of my motivation is thinking about the praise it'll get. I'm sure most everyone here thinks highly of their games, too. I just think I'm setting myself up for disappointment. Especially if I move my project onto RMXP.

Here's the thing. While I'd like to think I'm a master at RPGM1 (except for battles), RMXP allows for more creativity than I likely have. There are probably plenty of puzzles I've thought up that could be done much better on RMXP, but I'm not sure if I can come up with the ideas to make them better. And there's also the graphics and music. Obviously, I'm not about to try writing my own music. And creating graphics would take too long, so all I'll wind up doing is taking what's there and maybe do a bit of sprite editing/recoloring. Except for the monsters. Those things look too wonky. Custom RGSS scripts? Not unless I get ambitious, or wind up swiping stuff from other sites.

So here's my question. Slayers' Reign as-is on RMXP with mostly default graphics, amateur gameplay, and very lacking in custom scripts. Would you still be as interested?

Actually, I'll probably do it anyway. The most important part of SR is the story, and I want to show the story to as many people as possible.

Well there you go... I don't think you really need to worry about anything else, honestly.

Truth be told, SK and I kind of played around with the idea of moving to XP as well. But with so much work behind us already, we opted for finished what we started on. I too would to claim knowing my way around RM1 quite well... and I feel comfortable creating a game in it. Though, this will probably be my last project with RM1. Depending on when we finish, what RMs are out by that time, and what console they are for... we might try another sometime in the future, just not on RM1.

Well, I don't want to completely give up on RPGM1. I wanna make use of that Dracoon sprite I made. :)

Well, tell you what Dray. I'll download the game today and try to help anyway I can.

And I must say, the visual effects are really neat. The beginning is cool to watch, what with the rain effects and all.

All for now, I'm eager to continue.
