I have some NPC players scattered about in my game. Because whats a town with out people? And I want the people to stay stuff. I want some people to say some random things just to be random. And I want a few to give some clues about my game. The problem I'm having is thinking on how I want to word things to make it sound good. Who I want to say what with out either giving out too much of the hints or sounding really corny, stupid, dumb, cheesy.

Any advice out there?

here's some advice, for not making it sound corny, try to avoid words that are very commonly used today like "Stuff", "Like" ect.

I was working on my game this morning and came across a line of text reading: "Don't forget to equip that stuff." sounds very bad right? well, I changed it to "Don't forget to equip those things"

As for hint giving, I can't really help there, but try to make it sound like a secret, like "Behind the waterfall, password is 3" which, the area that hint comes into play has 5 waterfalls.

Sounds good. :) The other thing I been running into is that
sometimes if I want to add something funny into the game. It comes out sounding more silly then funny. Kinda like a really really bad joke. I thought about not using any kind of humor. But some times I think a wise crack here and there adds to the fun of the game. How would I had humor to a game with out sounding silly, corny, stupid, dumb, cheesy?

Are there any other kinds of humor?

I might be able to help with the lines more, but I'd need to know the situation you want to hint at or what you want to accomplish. As such, I might be sitting in the chatroom more often to provide advice such as this, if anyone is interested.

Figure out who the character is by first saving the "cheesy" stuff for each character.

The more you edit each character, the more you'll find the distinctions between each and the easier it will be to revise each NPC's role to sound less and less cheesier until you get it just how you want it.

In other words, carve out layers of all the characters together instead of trying to 'finish' one character at a time.

Think of the people in most games.

They're all normal.

I hate that!

I don't know or meet many people who behave according to the Norms of Society!!

Make Lunatics!

Make Arrogant Butt-Holes!

Make Tushy-Kissing and Overbearing Shop Keepers!

Make Stereotypes!! (They really do exist, you know!).

All these things are "Real Realism" but too often missing from "Realistic" games. That's why I exaggerate them for my games and make them comedy.

But in moderation it works for "breaking the mold" in serious games too.

I think...
