I just got my first PlayStation 1 controller. I've already started to tear it apart (single-sided PCB FTW!), but I leave for my blood tests soon. Once I get back from those I'll probably be going to bed (I pass out, but I still have insomnia :p) - well, bed after I eat (have to fast for a while... so hungry....).

Should be making good progress shortly, though. Will post video & pictures as soon as I have something. :tup

Yeah, I've had to go without eating for a while. What's really strange is that I usually don't eat till noon (no breakfast) all the time... and I'm fine. But if I'm told I can't eat till a certain time (even noon), by that time, I'll be so hungry I'll want to eat my own leg.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your results. And yeah, I can imagine how much more simplistic a PS1 controller might be. The circuit board should be quite simple without two analog controllers, rumble, and the whole nine yards.

It is a lot simpler than the PS2 controller, but the traces are still really small.

Just got back from the blood test - I have to go back tomorrow to do a special test that they couldn't do today. Now I have to fast again and be there at eight AM.

Since I can't go to bed yet, I'll start work on that controller I got. Updates will be posted later.

I got all the wires soldered to the PS1 controller PCB - http://rpgmakerxp.us/assets/IMG_0340.JPG.

I have hooked it up to my prototyping microcontroller and am doing some experiments now. It looks like text input might be a bit slow from this early test - but I'm not done testing, yet.

Cursor moves can be as little as a one millisecond pulse, while button presses require a minimum of 3 milliseconds.

I'm not having any problem with the buttons, but the d-pad is giving me trouble. Mostly, it it just ignores some of the d-pad presses every now and again. If I only set it to use one d-pad button, and press it repeatedly, it works just fine. The trouble comes when I start to string multiple presses together. It may be that I'm not allowing enough time in between presses, so I'll look into that.

I'll post some video after more tests, and it's working better.

So it works... in a mannor of speaking. That's great. I mean, even if I can't type at my full speed, it'll still do the job. Also, you mentioned you might be able to buffer all the keystrokes if you get ahead of RM1, you still going to be able to do that?

Yeah - buffering shouldn't be a problem. Right now it's just getting the controller to recognize each button press properly that I'm having trouble with. But I'll figure it out, it'll just take some time and experimentation.

Since I heard that Kupid is going to be using ps/2 keyboards, I looked at what I had at work... and most of them were dusty pieces of crap, so I started looking online. And most of the ps/2 keyboards have a funky layout with really small backspace buttons and re-arranged keys above the arow keys. First one I found that was really anything normal was this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6823107120

So yeah, I went head and got that one. Even if you, Thutmose, don't ever get it working, it'll be nice to have around if ever I needed it to work on a horribly old computer. But yeah, to save anyone else to trouble of looking, I suggest that one.

Sweet, that keyboard is perfectly normal. Wish Listed for my next order at the egg.

That keyboard looks good.

I'm starting to hone in on the correct pulse-timings. Oddly enough, an 8 millisecond pulse for the d-pad presses results in faster movement than the 3-millisecond pulse, and it's more reliable (i.e. fewer missed presses). There are some recorded vids of the consistency tests on the live stream link. I was really worried about the missed presses, but now I'm beginning to build more confidence as my work and testing moves on.

I'm actually quite impressed how fast the cursor can go in RM1. I didn't even notice that the cursor was going over to L before pressing the M key. I'd like to say you are doing great, but I have no real frame of reference... but keep up the good work never the less.

Thanks. After some more consistency and speed testing, I'm going to start doing some experiments with moving the cursor all around the keyboard to see how fast I can get it to go. That should give a good indication of the maximum typing speed.

58 wpm, no mistakes. Not the best I could have done, but that's probably a good adverage.

Being able to do THAT in RM1 would be the most epic win ever.

Good, then Thutmose doesn't have to meet horribly high expectations as far as speed is concerned.

Just got the 100 controllers.

http://www.rpgmmag.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8552

Among the controllers I received is a clear one. Once I get the prototype completed, I'll try to use the clear controller for a demo unit so you all can see what a completed Kupid looks like on the inside.

Also - I just ordered some electronics supplies that will hopefully increase production speed.

I just looked at the pics... will it be a problem with the few controllers that have additional buttons? I'm pretty sure I saw a few turbo or macro buttons. That might kind of suck.
