Hmm, I know there's an article about the piracy of the PC RPGMs somewhere, but I can't find it. Unless it was in the printed issue.

Basically, we don't support RPG Maker 2000 or 2003. Neither of those titles got an official US release. Instead, a couple people took each, gave them unofficial translations, and put them up on the net for free without Enterbrain's permission. Enterbrain is who makes the RPG Makers. Because their hacks were very popular, Enterbrain never got around to making official releases, even though they more or less wanted to in each instance. RPG Maker XP, on the other hand, they got around to officially releasing here. It can be found at places like download.com, for $60 plus a 30-day free trial. We allow talk of it. But as far as 2000 and 2003 goes, this place has a zero-tolerance rule against their use since this is an officially supported site.

There's one in the printed issue of the mag, yup yup.

There used to be one on the pavilion until I pulled it because of all the hate-mail I was getting on a daily basis.

Draygone, here's the entire text of the pavilion article:

Quote:
During the localization of RPG Tsukuru 3 (RPG Maker 1 US version) Enterbrain's newly released PC RPG Maker title, RPG Maker 2000 was released in japan, and promptly pirated by Don Miguel; a former member of the group Kanji Hack, which previously translated and pirated RPG Maker 95. Many suspect this is the reason ASCII cancelled the US release of RPG Maker 1, despite no official word supporting the theory. Regardless, RPG Maker was eventually released after the US branch of ASCII Entertainment broke off to become Agetec.

Don Miguel got his first warning from Enterbrain in late 2000. He ignored it since Enterbrain had no way to do anything to him as he lived in Russia. He even posted the cease and desist letter on his website and mocked it.

In 2001, a few high ranking members of the RPG Maker Pavilion's forum were made aware of enterbrain's plans to try releasing a then-unknown PC RPG Maker title in the US based on the success of the console version. So heavy anti-piracy efforts were started by these people involving contacting webmasters hosting the software, and if they refused to take it down even after they were informed about the potential US release, their hosts were contacted and as a result many RM2K sites were shut down. If the hosts ignored us, we got the IDSA (now the ESA) involved and they shut them down. Some of the RM2K fanbase retaliated by hacking and spamming the agetec and pavilion sites and forums (Don Miguel even taking part in one spamming/flaming incident at agetec's forum). This went on for a year, until I assume they got tired and stopped. Many "2Kers" accused the console RPGM community of attacking their forums first, although such an attack never took place. After a few months, there hadnt been any further word from Enterbrain on the status of a PC RPG Maker release for the US, so assuming they had been lied to by Enterbrain, the anti-piracy efforts of the Pavilion lessened, but never really stopped.

Later, in 2002 they found out that the upcoming RPG Maker 2003 was the version set for a US release.

Enterbrain was hell-bent on getting the title released in english. This time, the anti-piracy efforts of the pavilion members became more focused. Two members of the pavilion, Blaze and myself (Valkysas) contacted Don Miguel directly, since we believed that if anyone was going to pirate the software, it would be him. In a private chat, we gave him all the info we had obtained directly from enterbrain. He agreed to remove RM2K from his site, and to ask those he was on good terms with in the community to do the same. He then informed us that he had grown to hate the RM2K community because of how badly they treated him for seemingly no reason, and that he never had any intention of taking part in RM2K3's translation partially because of this. Later that night, a message appeared on his website informing people that after being contacted by Enterbrain, he had decided to pull RM2K from the site, and anyone talking about the piracy of 2K3 would be banned.

Shortly after Don miguel and others pulled out, Enterbrain started circulating questionaires among the RPG Maker communities to find out what the best way to release 2K3 would be. Victory was close. We were sure of it.

Of course as most of us know, many people ignored the questionaires and the page on enterbrain's own site begging them to stop the piracy so they could release an english version, and 2K3 was pirated anyways. So victory = denied. As a result 2K3 was never released in the US, despite enterbrain having nearly finished the translation. The Pavilion members who circulated the info about the potential US release were branded as liars, and yet again, the Pavilion and Agetec were invaded. As always, the Agetec attacks made no sense, since the members of their forum didnt take any part in the anti-piracy efforts.

XP was pirated as well. Luckily the piracy of it was much smaller than before, with a large amount of people deciding just to stick with 2K and 2K3, and most or the sites that previously hosted such material were gone thanks to the anti-piracy efforts of the Pavilion members. So Enterbrain decided to give an english release a shot, in a digital method that wouldnt hurt them much financially if it failed, since they wouldnt have to manufacture discs, and print manuals and packaging.

By now, I find it impossible to believe that there is any chance anyone thinks that RPG Maker 2000 is legal.
