What are you trying to do in the game?

First i am trying to have it when you talk to a certain charater, it sets it so that when you talk to another person, that person joins the party and gives a key to open the first dungeon

Easy.

You'll need to use modes or variables.

Set the future party member's Mode One to a generic greeting, complaint, or whatever. Set up his Mode Two to contain the "___ Joins the party and gives you a key..." messages (and anything else you want him to say) and use the Gain Item and Join Party commands.

To get him into mode two use the other character.

When you speak to that character display a message and use Modify Mode, being sure to change the command such that it effects whom you want and how you want (future Party member to mode 2).

You should, at this point, put the "other guy" in to another mode too or you'll wind up with a nasty loop.

Finally put the NPC that joins the party into a third Mode (can be done right after he or she (or it, if you are playing one of my games) joins the party). In this 3rd mode set the display options (in the Mode Editor) to Off.

I think that covers everything.

If you are good with logic, this can all be done for less memory using Variables and Value Conditional Branches. That way would only use two modes for the guy who joins the party. But using all Modes for this is easier at first.

If you still need help, just ask.

Peace.
