I found this official RPG Maker Web contest a few days ago as I was buying the RPG Maker Humble Bundle, and I'm pretty impressed. It might be the biggest RPG Maker contest to date and it's certainly got the best prizes.

It apparently just started last week, the game only needs to be an hour or so long, and the top prize is a whopping 10 Grand. Only caveat is that (with exceptions) work on the game or code cannot have started before May 29.

Just wanted to let everyone know in case you're interested in taking the plunge.

Are you ready for the excitement of the 2014 Indie Game Development Contest? Make your dream game during the month of June for a chance to win huge cash prizes (up to $10,000), widespread acclaim, and possibly a review by one of our celebrity judges. Now is your chance to grab the spotlight and become a renowned indie developer!

Overview

June is going to be a massive month for us. Not only is RPG Maker being featured in a Humble Bundle, but June is also National Game Development Month. To celebrate, we here at RPG Maker, in partnership with Humble Bundle, are holding an Indie Game Maker Contest for the entire month!

Here's the best part: there's no restriction on genre or engine! Games will be separated into two categories (RPG and non-RPG) and judged for their presentation, gameplay, and fun factor. Feel free to use any engine you want and make any kind of game you desire (as long as you follow the rules, of course). The games must be complete, though, so be sure to budget your time carefully! We do recommend keeping the play time to under one hour, as the judges will typically stop playing at that point.
This is your chance to have a blast and create that short, creative game you always dreamed of and win a huge prize! If you're an aspiring commercial indie developer, this could be a golden opportunity to put your name on the map!

Contest Timeline

May 29 - June 30, 2014 – Game Development period. Create an awesome gaming experience!
June 30 11:59PM UTC – Deadline for submissions. Completed games only. No late entries will be accepted!
July 1-7 – People's Choice voting period. Voting closes on July 7 at 11:59PM UTC!
July – Judging period. Judges will determine a Grand Prize winner, as well as rank the top three entries in the RPG and non-RPG categories based on a scoring rubric.
Late July – Winners are announced!
Late July/Early August – We will hold a podcast in which we talk about the contest, the winners, and more!

Prizes

There are 11 prize packages up for grabs, and 8 of them include cold hard cash:

Grand Prize: $10,000
1st-3rd place (each category): $2,500, $1,000, and $500
People’s Choice: $2,000

Plus, all participants will receive $10 off any purchase in the RPG Maker Web store!

I wonder what they would do if they had any console submission...

That's a good question! Not sure they'd accept it, given the need for all contest judges to have the disc in order to play a console submission.

Yeah, that's more rhetorical than anything else, you know, considering the contest is based off of the PC Makers recent sell on Humble Bundle. But I totally wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall if they extracted a file to play a game and got a bunch of .GME files.

Looks like they updated the rules! Among them:
  • The game must be made in an actual game engine, and not a map editor/mod of an existing game. Rom hacks and games that run on emulators are not allowed.
  • Games must be submitted via this platform and have an active download available. If the game is browser-based, a link to the game must be provided.
  • Games must be playable on Windows (at least in compatibility mode for Windows XP, Vista, or 7).

So, a console maker game wouldn't be allowed (unfortunately - because yeah, I'd love to be a fly on the wall there too :D), but other game making engines like Game Maker are fine.

I got started today on what I hope becomes my entry. I'll post a little more about it if it looks like it's going to jel.

I'm pretty sure those rules have been there since the beginning.

Anyway, I'm working on my own entry atm. Hopefully it'll stop me from booting up Survival III and focus on II. I know it sounds weird that way, but it works for me.

This sounds very fascinating, but I just don't have time to learn a brand-new RM.

If you guys would like to, check out my entry! About an hour long and I personally think very fun to play.

With a lot of help from 1ce and a couple other guys at the Pavilion (Redeye and TheHonorableRyu), I was able to get it to a good state in time for the deadline - barely. My slow upload speed meant that I got in at around 7:20pm, staring down an 8:00pm deadline.

I hope you made it in as well, MR.

Congratulations!

Apparently I did. http://contest.rpgmakerweb.com/game/vie ... 7NA8UDCf8s

I had thought that I was accidentally kept out of it because I had gotten the message that I was too late and the contest was over when I last tried to look at my game's page, but it turns out I'm still in.

Good luck in your game! I am actually quite unsatisfied with mine. If you play it, you'd understand. Eh.

I've been playing your game MRev. Astounding amount of polish, I am really liking it so far. I had a bit of a rough time with the first boss even! Everything just feels really smooth. You have a lot going on as well. There's a ton of work in this!

Thanks!

I hope you realize (just as I hope the judges do...) that you can save in rooms/areas with the campfires or the personal quarters at PC HQ. I forgot to inform the player of that (like before the first boss, lol).

Also, you're about 45% through the game, lol.
