Births to Unmarried U.S. Women Set Record By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 54 minutes ago

Nearly 1.5 million babies, a record, were born to unmarried women in the United States last year, the government reported Friday. And it isn't just teenagers any more.

"People have the impression that teens and unmarried mothers are synonymous," said Stephanie Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics.

But last year teens accounted for just 24 percent of unwed births, down from 50 percent in 1970, she commented.

The increases in unmarried births have been among women in their 20s, she said, particularly those 25 to 29.

Many of the women in that age group are living with partners but still count as unmarried mothers if they haven't formally married, Ventura noted.

The 20s are the prime childbearing years, regardless of whether the mother is married or not, she said.

Among teens, more than 80 percent of mothers were unmarried.

There were 1,470,152 babies born to single women in 2004, 35.7 percent of all births in the country, NCHS said. That was up from 1,415,995 a year earlier.

Births to older women continued to increase, Brady Hamilton of NCHS pointed out, reflecting choices these women are making in terms of careers and having families.

The birth rate for women aged 35 to 39 increased 4 percent from 2003 to 2004. It was up 3 percent for women aged 40 to 44 and 9 percent for those 45 to 49.

Other findings of the report included:

_There was a total of 4,115,590 births in the country in 2004, up from 4,089,950 in 2003.

_Births to whites declined by nearly 18,000 while Hispanics were up 32,000, there was an increase of more than 8,000 in births to Asians and a rise of just 72 births among black women.

_The total birth rate was 14.0 per 1,000 women, down from 14.1 in 2003.

_The birth rate for women aged 15 to 19 was 41.2 per 1,000, down from 41.6 in 2003 and a record low. The teen birth rate was 61.8 in 1991 and has been declining since.

It's going up. Interesting.

Being who I am, I'd really not like to go back to the 50s. I like not being lynched. :p

But why do you think that births, to unmarried women, are going up so much? Marriage is such a great thing that I can't understand why more people aren't tying the knot.

'Cause more and more people are realizing that they don't care about the piece of paper.

'Cause more and more people are becoming unaffiliated with religion.

'Cause THE WORLD IS SLIPPING INTO EVIL

Or maybe it's because women are whores who need to stay in the kitchen and cook my f*cking dinner, but have decided that they're going to be whores instead. Yeah, that sounds more reasonable.

Man, why do you keep doing this? You'll stop hating women when you remove yourself from whatever dumbassed environment you're in now. Most reasonable women hate being your stereotypical woman just like you would hate being a stereotypical man.

Uh...I haven't said anything about what you're talking about. Besides, I'm way past all that other stuff to the point that I don't care.

However, I was just asking why you thought it was dropping. Marriage is now just a state thing, now. And that piece of paper, as you said, holds good value. I really do think that marriage is good.

Oh, ha. Well, that's good. I didn't really pay attention to any of your later debates on that subject.

*cough*

I actually think Really Awesome has a point. More and more people aren't getting married, but living together.

Why?

When you get married, I think a mentality sets in. Like that since you're bound, you can do whatever to your partner(IE beat them) and well, you're married. The only way out is to then get a divorce, which is actually a lot of work. To be blunt, people think that since it's technical to leave them, they can take advantage of you.

This actually happened to my art teacher... she got married, and then her husband started beating her and threatened to kill her if she told anyone, or filed for divorce. She regretted getting married from not having an easy escape.

And people are getting lazier in America by the day, maybe they don't use condoms and are too lazy to go file.

Same here but births are going up so much because people gotta have sex. Some people don't care if they get pregnant because there is always abortion. They are some people that shouldn't even have children let alone birth one. People don't want to get married for some reason. like the sex will end or I'm still young I need to be free.

Well, frequently, hitting and beatings can happen way before marriage.

I don't agree with that mentality that you mention, either. That's what I would say if I didn't know better. No one just starts out fine and goes to being an abusive asshole without being one from the beginning (sans drug/alcohol abuse). They were hiding it.

And easy escape my ass. Even if they were boyfriend/girlfriend, he could have still said those things if she wanted to break up from him. Nothing would stop her from moving, physically, away from the guy unless he pulled a Misery on her.

I figured another thing- I believe people aren't being as strictly religious as before too, so they could just be living together and too lazy to go to City Hall.:p

That was a joke my man, If i could use someone else as the joke it would be different. But I can't besides some of these people who have kids use the kids sometimes as bait(I can't think of the word right now). If she had sex with lets sya 6 men at the same time. Had one baby, didn't get a paternity test so she uses all the men for child support money. Now I'm not saying they shouldn't pay even though any one of the idiots could be the father. Only a real man would of stepped up to take care of the child. Even if it wasn't his but still take care of the child.
