I'm learning about these kind of things in college, I thought I'd pass this information off to everyone.
http://www.ornl.gov/sci/roofs+walls/insulation/ins_01.html

You can learn some simple techniques to make your house more efficent. The best way to do this is put insulation in your roof. The higher the R-value of the insulation, the better. Use a good, high number on ceilings, like R-37.

If you guys need any information, I can help you with any questions. If I don't know, I'll find the answer. Pretty sweet deal huh?

Well insulation is important all seasons, keeps your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Of course the problem is if you live in a apartment or some kind of living situation like that you can't really do these things. Also insulation is not really cheap, and installing it isn't the easiest thing to do and requires gloves and masks (assuming it's still made from fiberglass).

Of course I'm curious as to what you are majoring in to bring up this information as what you are leaning in college. My guess is Materials Science.

Changed the topic title. Oops :blush

I'm in HVAC/R, short for Heating, Ventalation, Air-Conditioning, and Refridgeration.

We're learning about this because comfort is basically my job. Insulation helps keep you comfortable, and the home status is an important piece in deciding what size furnace you need. You also need to be careful for inflitration, or uncontrolled air leaking into your house.

:lol Its funny that out off all the people to talk about keeping warm, we are taking advice from an Ice.

Don't melt talking about it. :P

Anyways, What I use to keep me warm at night is a plug in heating pad. I got it from walmart. It works well. The pad gos under your bed sheets. You put your blankets on top. You put it on about 1 hour before going to bed. As soon as you stick your chilled feet in.. You can feel the hot heat tosting your feet and legs nicly sandwiched between the sheets and the blankets. VERY NICE. I am able to turn the heat off at night in my home and just leave my bed warming. I honestly think it saves money too. My only problem is that.. It gives off a dry heat. After a while it can cause problems with your skin. Making you get a dry ich. Other then that. I recomend it. :D

It saves you money? Wow, I would have thought that it would cost you mucho on electrical bills, which is always the worst in winter, being why good insulation is important. I figure a drafty house would be cheaper though, and one can just take a piece from history and hang blankets over all the walls =P

^ Well the idea is that I don't need to try to heat a whole house. And with a drafty home your thermostat, will keep kicking on. On the heating pad, it lets you choose 1-9 settings. So insted of heating a whole home. Your only heating a bed. I would think heating a bed would be cheaper then heating a house. But then again I can never be too sure.. Well bottem line.. IT FEELS AWESOME! :D
