is drawing doushinji showing your appretiation for your favorite show, or mocking it??

Doushinji couldn't possibly be classified as degrading, because it would take a love of a show to even care enough about it TO draw.

If someone wanted to make a parody of someone's show then they would make a parody. It would be something like Excel Saga or Abenobashi(I can't remember the rest of the name)

But other people think Doushinji is just hentai and sex.

if it seems like its mocking it by making it hentai where it isn't supposed to be and stuff then its not doushinji is Fanart. ^.^

I tried my hand at FF7 once. Thought it looked really cool, but over the years I think that it's an insult to the great name. That being said, is it really doushinji?

I don't find Dojinshi to be degrading - it depends on what it's about. Some people draw Dojinshi and publish them in underground Japanese conventions for Dojinshi and self-published artists.

It's not really fanart, because Dojinshi gets published either legally or illegally, and is usually in the form of a tradition manga. Dojinshi usually consists of these three different attributes.

1) An artist drawing a copyright work. If you publish it, it's a dojinshi, as you couldn't really publish this kind of copyright material legally.

2) An artist publishing extremely sexual content involving copyright or trademarked characters. This happens often in some Dojinshi, if not all.

3) A lot of people draw dojinshi if they draw a manga that is containing of copyright material that they cannot publish by the usual, legal means.

These three values are on an "either, and or" basis. Not all dojinshi must be sexual, but then again a lot is. I would kind of consider myself a dojinshi artist because I once drew a parody of Excel Saga, but I never published it - instead I copied the pages and gave it to some friends of mine. I never owned the copyrights. Even still, I never drew one thing sexual in the manga.
